2267.0. "HUBwatch / DECbridge90 problem?" by STKAI1::EROSEN () Wed May 10 1995 12:12

    Hi!

    We are in urgent need for advice on the following problem.
    Ther is currently no Hubwatch support available in MCS/Sweden.

    Any advice is much appreciated.
    /Ebbe Rosen

Problem:

The customer is running HUBwatch V2.0.1 on VAX/VMS, and managing DEChub90's
He has problems on his LAN(s).
CISCO routers report lots of errors on ethernet port.

Customer want's to use HUBwatch to check what sort of problem this is.
But he has problems.
With HUBwatch he looks at DECbridge90 counters (backbone side).
Counter are either zero or > 4000000000.
If counters are reset they increment from zero to > 4000000000 in zero time
(looking 3-4 seconds later).
This looks like a bug. It must be impossible to have > 4000000000 errors on
ethernet in just 3-4 seconds.
Counters that 'overflow' is: Collision limit exceeded
                             Carrier loss

Possible problem is in DECbridge90.
DECbridge90 has firmware V3.1 (Hw vers 1.0, ROM vers 1.0)

Customer consider HUBwatch to be of no help in asssisting him to troubleshoot
his LAN problem.
Because he for the moment has problems on his LAN this call is a little bit
urgent for him.

2267.1What does the bridge think about all this?ROGER::GAUDETBecause the Earth is 2/3 waterWed May 10 1995 13:4313
You might want to check if it's HUBwatch reporting bad values for the counters
(V2.0.1 is an old version of HUBwatch) or if the bridge really sees that many
errors. Since you're running on VMS, do the following:

	$ MCR NCP
	NCP> CONNECT VIA <circuit> PHYS ADDR <MAC_Address_of_bridge>
		.
		.
	DECbridge> SHOW PORT 1

This will give you all the counters as seen from the bridge.

  re:0

   can you check the terminator on the backbone side ?
   seems that the aui/bnc port is open on DECbridge90 or bad cable between
   DECbridge90 and the network.

2267.3customer agreed to close the call for nowSTKAI1::EROSENTue May 16 1995 11:3214
Many thanks for both your replies and suggestions.
The customer have however agreed to close the service request.
They now know that they run HUBwatch version which is very old (V2)
and have promised to upgrade to V3.1, which can help.
In regards to their LAN problem (LAT and TELNET time out with many
collisions) they have decided that they currently dont want to pay for a
Digital network specialist as they are fairly competent in this area
themselves and have sniffer. They will investigate on their own first.
