2238.0. "PEswitch & 900 EF switch cables?" by ANGLIN::CLAYTON (Merlin Clayton (314)947-6763) Mon May 01 1995 09:50

Does the PE Sitche, and the 10BaseT ports on the 900 EF switch require two
different drop cables to connect the same station device - one being a
cross over cable, and the other not?

I just want to confirm my understanding of the respective installation guides
for each device...

The PE Switch install guide says "The PEswitch 900 module uses embedded
crossover 10BaseT connectors."

The DECswitch 900 EF install guide says "The DECswitch 900 module uses
straight-through 10BaseT connectors."

These two statements obviously imply an answer to my original question.

My next question for benefit of explanation to a customer is, why do two
switches with similar functionality require two different types of station
cables?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Merlin

2238.2RE: Wiring differences between DECswitch900EF & PEswitch900NETCAD::BATTERSBYMon May 01 1995 11:5513
    The PEswitch is a "Desktop Switch" as opposed to a "Departmental
    Switch" (which the DECswitch 900EF is). The PEswitch supports a
    max of 64 addresses on all 6 Ethernets combined, so it must be
    used as a Personal Ethernet switch, and not as a Departmental
    switch. So think of the PEswitch 900TX as a replacement for
    repeaters, which give *each* port a full 10mbps instead of the
    shared Ethernet which repeaters give you. Thus the PEswitch 900TX
    UTP ports have an internal crossover like repeaters. Thus it increases
    the bandwidth brought to the desktop without rewiring.
    Hope this explains the reason for the difference in how/why the
    wiring requirements for the DECswitch 900EF and the PEswitch 900TX.

2238.3Info on Bridging/switching products on DEChub web home page..NETCAD::BATTERSBYMon May 01 1995 12:046
    BTW, you can see & read more on the features & differences between
    the three bridging/switching products, by going to the internal web
    page http://www-dechub.lkg.dec.com/internal-info/switches. Take
    advantage of this information, extract it for future reference.
