Hello, I have a several questions concerning the node names seen when accessing the "host list". Our customer is using the Ultrix version of probewatch. 1) What are the mechanisms involved in trying to transalate from an address to a node name (both IP and DECnet)? For example.... Do we access a "name server" for IP translation? Do we look into the the IP host list on the node running probewatch? Do we access the list created with the "management tool editor? 2) If we access many sources of information to translate addresses to names, what is the order of search? Does any list overide any other? 3) If a node is running both IP and DECnet is there a way to see both the IP name/address and the Decnet information? I am only getting the IP name/address. Thank you, Bob

I believe the ULTRIX version only looked in the local /etc/hosts file for IP name translation. It did not do DECnet name translation, and it calculated the DECnet Phase IV address from the MAC address. You can put in name to MAC address translations using the Name editor. Since the PROBEwatch displays only handle one name/address, there is no way to see both IP and DECnet information. |
