2202.0. "DR90TS self test question on power up" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Wed Apr 19 1995 13:38

This note is a continuation of the problem mentioned in note 2190.2 of
this conference with some DR90TS (in fact about 50% of the of the so far
tested 12 units) failing self test when there is no AUI loopback or
    Thinwire Termination installed.

Note 2190.3 says this is abnormal behaviour - meaning all units
should pass self-test without having to terminate the Thinwire or the
    AUI port.

If we all agree to note 2190.3 as the behaviour, then we (Digital
MCS) has to give this customer 200 AUI loopback plugs free, because he
has purchased 200 units (DR90TS) and he has no AUI loopback plugs with
    him.

So, could someone EMPHATICALLY say YES it needs one or the other
loopback or NO it doesn't need any LOOPBACK to pass self test on power
up, rather than say it SHOULD WORK and pass self test on power up.

This customer wants only to use the RJ45 ports of the DR90TS units.
He has nothing to connect to the thinwire or the AUI port. The units
    are all standalone.

I stated in my note 2190.3 that what you are describing is abnormal
behavior. You may take that as an empathetic NO it doesn't need any
LOOPBACK to pass self test on power up.

While we are unable to reproduce this problem in our lab, we have a
suspicion that it may be related to noise pickup on the unterminated
thinwire port. We are investigating. We also will likely need to
examine at least one of the units in question. We'll contact you off
line if this turns out to be the case.
