| This is always our preference. There are cases where there isn't room
on the front panel, and the label goes on the back.

2186.2 | DECswitch's & PEswitch's will/do have on front.... | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | | Wed Apr 12 1995 13:01 | 6 |
| Shortly, all three 900 bridges/switches will have, (if it hasn't
already been phased in), will have the mac addresses on the front
bezels. The DECswitch 900EF & EE are the ones which haven't had the
mac address on the front bezel up to now.

2186.4 | Er...there is an "electronic" way to get this info too :-) | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | | Wed Apr 12 1995 17:58 | 10 |
| Of course, another method that does work quite well, (if one
takes the time to do it), is when initially installing a module
in a HUB or stand-alone, to write down the MAC address before buttoning
it into a docking station, or plugging it into a HUB slot, then
transfer this address to a label that can be placed on the front of
the module. It's always a good idea too to have a terminal plugged
into the console port of your HUB or docking station, where one can
get this information and make up a label that way.

2186.5 | Yes...but | NAC::LICAUSE | | Thu Apr 13 1995 08:25 | 16 |
| RE:.4 I might agree that making a list of MAC addresses at
installation time is a good idea, but it's like wiring diagrams and
other such schemes. It doesn't take long before their out of date or
ignored completely. Particularly in large installations where dozens
of hubs and scads of hub and standalone devices exist.
From experience, it is much easier to deal with a device that has a
front panel MAC id already in place. This saves time and prevents
errors.
For those times when one does not always have a terminal handy or fails
to bring along the laptop to plug into the isolated SER closet.
Looking forward to front panel ID's.

2186.6 | DECserve r900 is on back. | PTOJJD::DANZAK | Pittsburgher  | Mon Apr 24 1995 23:57 | 8 |
| The DECserver also is on the back and - with HUBwatch - if you've not
entered the MAC address (for the 900) in the table...then...aarugh!
(I've powered off the *$@(* thing many times just to get the address
and reconfig)
