2164.1 | Bad news and good news | ROGER::GAUDET | Because the Earth is 2/3 water | Tue Apr 04 1995 14:14 | 17 |
| DECagent 90 V3.0 firmware will not manage the DECrepeater 90TS at all, in
neither its own hub nor a remote hub. The V3.0 firmware will be providing
support for the new higher-density repeaters and the DECstack 90 environment.
But the good news is that the new V2.0 DECrepeater 90TS firmware will provide
management of repeaters in its hub, so you will be able to get a hub view of
90TS's hub by specifying the 90TS's IP address to HUBwatch. And any of the
"dumb" repeaters (i.e. those which do not have an integral agent) in that hub
will be manageable through the 90TS.
The above statements also apply to the DECrepeater 90FS.
Note that this new firmware will be available in the next wave of firmware due
out shortly. Contact product management for schedule and other functional
requests.

2164.2 | A potential problem coming up here.... | STKHLM::WEBJORN | Gullik Webjrn Network Advisory | Tue Apr 04 1995 14:33 | 17 |

Well, easy
Remove all DECagents when installing manageable repeaters. However
this might be a problem for people adding a new *unit* including
management support that conflicts with another *unit* with mgmt.
Could an algorithm be invented that causes interconnected units
with management support to *disable* mgmt master functionality
based on for example discovering another unit with lower hwaddr,
( adding a new box will not disrupt already present mgmt installed
on older box with hopefully older hwaddr )
I bet the other HUB vendors do not add 2 or 3 or 4 management cards
to their hubs by 'mistake'.

2164.3 | Not to worry | ROGER::GAUDET | Because the Earth is 2/3 water | Tue Apr 04 1995 14:55 | 8 |
| There is a bus arbitration algorithm that is implemented by the devices (DENMA,
DEFMI and DETMI) that permits only one hub master. And if you insist on placing
more than one potential hub master in the hub, you can set a configuration
parameter in the DENMA setup menu so that the DENMA does not participate in the
bus arbitration scheme. I do not know if the DETMI/DEFMI will implement such a
parameter from their setup menus.

2164.4 | FS/TS allow this | NETCAD::FORINO | | Wed Apr 05 1995 09:54 | 3 |
| Yes - both the FS and TS allow you to enable/disable the hub mastership
for the devices.
