2055.0. "DEChub900 PINWIP/SEATING??" by NEWOA::GATHERN () Tue Feb 28 1995 06:03

I wonder if anyone can assist me with my problem. I am a MCS site res
engineer here at the Newbury office. One of my customers is Business
    Protection Services(Disaster Recovery).

They have recently installed a DEChub900 Multiswitch, and we are having
a few problems with it. It manifests itself in the following way:-

DEChub working fine everything powered up OK.
Remove DS900TM to move to another slot...it fails to power up. Reseat it
    several time with no success.
Moved DS900TM back to original slot...it still fails to power up.
Tried suspect DS900TM in a DEC Onehub...works OK.
Moved DS900TM back to original slot in DEChub......works OK

    Several days later:-
DEChub working fine everything powered up OK.
Remove DS900TM to move to another slot...it fails to power up.
Reseat it several time with no success.
    Power DEChub down
Remove ALL modules and PSU's and reseat
Powered up ok ...all modules ok

    Several days later:-
DEChub working fine everything powered up OK.
Remove DS900TM to move to another slot...it fails to power up.
Reseat it several time with no success.
Removed suspect DS900TM and left over w/end.
Inserted DS900TM back in it's original slot ..powered up OK

Late yesterday I removed and reinserted the DS900TM and it failed to
power up. Tried it in slot 2 ..still no power.

    Indications on the LED Display
    Power Status N+1
    System Power 15.0W

    Available Power 205.0W
    5V:47.0A 15V:8.0A

This morning, whilst waiting for a new backplane to arrive, I removed
an unused DECrepeater 900TM from slot 5 and the "dead" DS900TM in slot
2 sprung to life and powered up ok!!
Moved the DS900TM back to slot 5 ..powered up OK
Put a spare DS900TM in slot 2 ..powered up OK.

The current configuration is as follows:-

    1....DECrepeater 90FA
    2....DS900TM
    3....DECpacketprobe 90
    4....DS900TM
    5....DS900TM
    6....DECrepeater900TM
    7....DECrepeater900TM
    8....DECswitch 900EF
    PSU's x 4

    Power Status N+1
    System Power 15.0W

    Available Power 177.5W
    5V:43A 15V:7.5A

It has the latest MAM firmware 3.1.0.

Is this the "pinwipe" (seating?) problem that is mentioned in several
earlier notes, or is there another problem?.
Will changing the backplane solve the problem, or will it be a pointless
    exercise?.
Did the ECO/FCO to solve the"pinwipe" problem ever come out?.

The customer has also reported a loss of firmware info on the DS900
status display on the MAM. It sometimes fails to reprt what firmware
version the DS900 is running even though it recognise that there is a
    DS900 present.
    Are these problems connected?.

Sorry to go on for so long, but I hope for some inspiration from you
    "GURU's" out there

! Is this the "pinwipe" (seating?) problem that is mentioned in several
! earlier notes, or is there another problem?.

this could be a pin wipe problem. other problems could be
a bad cable that interconnects the MAM and the matrix board.
For a period of time manufacturing was incorrectly positioning the
cable inside box. the finger stock on the cover would cut into the
cable. I have also seen the problem go away by changing a power
supply ( they sit on the same bus).
