1996.0. "Lack of a DECagent 90 Question" by DPDMAI::DAVIES (Mark, SCA Area Network Consultant) Fri Feb 10 1995 08:09
Using HUBwatch for management, I have configured and installed many
DEChub 900s. I have never done the same for a DEChub 90 without a
DECagent 90. Yes, I find this simply amazing too.
Anyways, my ignorance is about to be displayed.
The older DEChub 90 modules (90L servers, some repeaters) do not have
SNMP management built in. Because of this, they require a DECagent 90
to be managed while in a DEChub 90 (with/without DECbridge, etc, etc)
The newer modules (server 90TL, 90M, repeater 90TS, etc) support SNMP
managemnt and can be managed inside the hub or standalone without the
use of a DECagent 90 or DECbridge 90.
OK, my question.
If you have a DEChub 90 with SNMP capable modules (say, 6 DECrepeater
90TS units), when managed with HUBwatch. are they managed "individualy"
as though they were standalone, OR do you get the picture of the DEChub
90 with the 6 modules in the respective slots?
Thanks,
Mark

| They will be managed individually as standalone modules. HUBwatch will
connect to an individual module based on the agent name or IP address
of that module. That module only knows about itself in the hub and
will come up as a standalone module.
There are plans to put some DECagent like capabilities in the 90TS and
90FS so that they can act as agents for other repeaters (and only
repeaters) but for now you just get them as standalone.

| Thats what I thought, but I needed confirmation before presenting the
final config to the customer.
Thanks,

How about the case of having other 90 modules on the hub90, such as
DECserver 90TL/90M, besides the 90 repeaters mentioned in .0 and .1?
Thanks.

1996.4 | You can have a "hub view" if you really want one | ROGER::GAUDET | Because the Earth is 2/3 water | Tue Mar 07 1995 07:49 | 9 |
| RE: .3
Same deal. They will all be managed as standalone modules.
BTW, if you want a "hub view" from HUBwatch you have to have a *hub* manager in
the hub (a.k.a. the DECagent 90). The SNMP-manageable repeaters and terminal
servers only manage themselves, not the hub.
