1982.0. "HUbwatch and traps" by DPDMAI::DAVIES (Mark, SCA Area Network Consultant) Wed Feb 08 1995 13:40

My customer has a few HUBwatch questions.

    1. When HUBwatch receives an IP Trap, is there a way to sound an audible
       alarm?

    2. On the same thought, if the customer has all of his DEChub displays
iconified (sp?), when the trap is received will the one which sent the
trap (and cause the subsequent audible alarm) provide some form of
visual notification, so that you do not have to open up each icon to
see which hub sent the trap?

    3. What traps can a DEChub 900 send?

    4. What traps can the modules send (module fan failure, intrusion on a
DECrepeater 900 TM port, offered load hits "red" limit, etc)

    Thanks,

    Mark

(Only HUBwatch for OpenVMS currently supports traps of any kind (and barely))
In the HUBwatch Events Viewer window, there is a menu item that produces
a pop-up window. In that pop-up window, you can turn the beep off and on,
and change its volume.

The current implementation has no correspondence between traps and HUBwatch
windows.

Discussed elsewhere in this conference, and in the HELP button in the
HUBwatch alarms setup window.

1982.2Few more questions..DPDMAI::DAVIESMark, SCA Area Network ConsultantThu Feb 09 1995 08:0825
    Two more questions:

    1. Are there plans to add trap support to Windows?

This is the product which gets sold into non-DEC envirnoments and is
the one which will get compared to the other vendors GUIs. I am
being asked regularly about whether traps are supported. Somebody
else's product must have this support and it is noe becoming a
"check off box" for many customers. We currently can not check it
       off.

May I asssume that when this product is fully supported on
HP-UX/OpenView and SuNet Manager (as well as Polycenter NetView),
that each of these platforms implementations will allow a trap to
be directed at the incorporated DEChub icon on the network map?

    2. If traps are to be added to HUBwatch/WIndows, will there be
correspondence between traps and HUBwatch/Windows icons?

The pain caused by the lack of this functionality is obvious.

    Thanks,

Nothing firm. The main reason they were added for the OpenVMS version was
because there is OpenView for PC's and NetView for OSF/1. There isn't
really anything of the sort for OpenVMS. We've talked a little about
redoing the traps in HUBwatch to make it real, but there is nothing planned
nor scheduled nor being worked on. (This would be a good time to contact
product management!)

If we ever touch the traps code again, it would have to do things like that.
What we have is clearly a stop-gap measure. Perhaps a note to product
management could get a project like that going...

When you send a note to product management, you'll be sure to include lots
of "$"'s, ""'s, ""'s, "Fr"'s, etc., in your note. ;-)
