1965.0. "Someone who wants PFEswitch 900TX" by DPDMAI::KORNS () Mon Feb 06 1995 11:02

    Saw this 100Base-T note in a newsgroup and thought of Digital.

    I'm not saying such a product makes sense, but someone out there
    is asking for it. If we made it, it'd probably be called a:

    	PFEswitch 900TX (Personal Fast Ethernet)

    and would replace the front panel 10Base-T ports with 100Base-T
    ports. It would still fit in with out FDDI or ATM strategy for
    fat-pipe backbone connections yet give those who desire it 100Mbps
    to the desktop with a protocol that seems to be taking of as a
    desktop link.

    Comments? If we built them, what 100Base-T products should we build?

    Dave

1965.1WHY do they want it?DELNI::PIEPERWed Mar 08 1995 15:426
    Why does someone want six 100 Mb Ethernet links to go to a 100 Mb FDDI
    backbone? If they really need the 100 Mb Ethernet at the desktop,
    where is that 100 Mb connection going to? If it is going onto the
    backbone, then 100 Mb worth of FDDI probably isn't enough. I am not
    trying to argue for or against this idea - I am just trying to
    understand WHY it is being requested and how it would be used.
