1914.0. "Help needed on basic Token Ring setup " by RDGENG::GREID (Bang that head that doesn't Bang !) Fri Jan 20 1995 10:15

    I have a customer who wishes to connect an Alpha and an IBM system
    to the same simple token ring setup for some testing.

    Being a novice at Token Ring, am I write in thinking that the
    most basic set-up they could use is a DECmau 900TL in standalone mode
    as the ring with both machines connected into a port each using a
    standard BN25G straight through cable.

    Is this the best way of setting things up ?

    Giles.

1914.1Check the Alpha config carefully.TROFS::WEBSTERNIS, London, CanadaFri Jan 20 1995 10:5812
	The BN25G to DECmau should work, as documented in the OPEN DECconnect
Applications Guide (under 802.5 configs).

	But, where are you getting the token ring port on the Alpha? Must
have the right bus (EISA to use Proteon card or other vendors, etc...), plus
the proper drivers. Check this out carefully.

	In the past, I have always had to install a Proteon P4100 or DNX/CNX
box in and put the Alpha or VAX box on the Ethernet side.

1914.2EW300 card for AlphaRDGENG::GREIDBang that head that doesn't Bang !Fri Jan 20 1995 11:0710

    	Larry, thanks for the reply. My customer says he has a EW300 to
    use on the Alpha, and the drivers come with OSF ? Could you give me
    some idea if this is legal and what the configuration would look like
    , if as you suggest the Alpha needs to connect to an ethernet and not
    straight into the DECmau.

    	Thanks for your time,

    	Giles.
1914.3need more info.TROFS::WEBSTERNIS, London, CanadaFri Jan 20 1995 11:2311
Giles;

	Not being a system's person, I do not know what an EW300 is, and
checking with our local sales support, did not recognize the name.

	What type of Alpha? 3000, 4000, 2100 etc....???

ps VAXmail me at TROOA::lwebster to take this off line.

1914.4IP routing works fineCOPCLU::PALMANNJan Palmann C/S Comms. CopenhagenWed Feb 01 1995 09:3518
            Hi.

            I have put an Alpha on a Token Ring, not to long ago.
    	    One interfase on the ring, and one on the ethernet.

    	    I belive it was an AXP3000/400s, and the interfase was
    	    The standart ethernet, and the DEC TRNcontroller 700
            16/4 Token Ring adapter til DEC, 3000 AXP,
    	    TURBOchannel, 1 slot.

        I set it up to Route IP between a lot of PC's on the token ring's,
        and a VAX on the ethernet.
        It works fine.

1914.5patch cable flavor??MSBCS::HURLEYThu Jan 18 1996 15:4812
    IN figure 3-50 of the open DECconnect guide on page 3-83 it shows a
    breakdown from the hub wiring closet to building wiring to the work
    area. I'm using bn25g cables as shown but I'm not sure if I use the
    bn25g cable for a patch also or do I use the bn26t-03?

    	On page 5-30 where it talks about the decmau 900tl (dtmau) it says

    "BN26T-03 patch cables are required when going from traditional Token
    Ring cable connections to RJ45 port connections. This cable includes
    and active balun, providing 150/100-ohm impedance matching.

    Any info would be helpful.
