| Absolutely. Managing a DECagent via HUBwatch over a SLIP connection on the
front panel DB25 works just fine. However, with V2.1.3 you do need to do some
manual configuration of the port before establishing a SLIP connection.
Since V2.1.3, there was some work to make the SLIP configuration permanent and
to auto-sense a SLIP connection (thus eliminating the need to select it from the
setup menu). I am not sure of the status of either of these efforts at this
time, but I will ask the responsible engineers to respond to this note.

| You can use SLIP over the Denma console port with V2.* code. Just
configure the server for SLIP mode on that port, setting the host
IP address to the Denma's IP address. Resetting the Denma will cause
the console to revert back to terminal mode.
We are currently working on V3.0 of Denma code. The update is primarily
to support the new stackable repeaters, but I have already revised
SLIP operation so that once you put it in SLIP mode, it will stay there
through normal resets. To go back to terminal mode, you can either
reset-to-defaults or you can just press the button on the front panel
AFTER the Denma has gone through its power up diagnostics (if you press
the button during the diags, it will effectively reset to defaults).
Note that this change will appear when V3.0 code is released.
Something worth pointing out about using SLIP on the Denma: the Denma
has only 1 IP address, even though it really has two interfaces (the
Ethernet port and the console port when in SLIP mode). It really should
have a separate address for each interface, but the IP stack was not
designed to handle more than one address. This won't necessarily cause
you any problems; it depends on how you are using the SLIP connection.
Just remember that if the terminal server is on the same LAN as the
Denma, they BOTH will reply to ARP requests, although with different
MAC addresses. If you are using the SLIP interface to manage the Denma
out-of-band, then the terminal server shouldn't be on the same LAN in
the first place (presumably that LAN is the one you are trying to fix
or debug). If code space and schedule allow we will add the second
IP address capability, but we are VERY low on code space, and this has
a much lower priority than the rest of the update effort.

Dave
