we are investigating tools for monitoring traffic and errors in a FDDI network , for a customer that will have 6 sites with each an FDDi network ( 13 hubs, 40 concs , 200 stations per ring ) from what i found in this note or the FDDI conference , there are either FDDI analysers for in-depth details ( liek HP , Chamelan , W&G ) , or SNMP counters in the FDDI modules ( bridge or concentrator ) . 1- are there others demands for such functionnality , let'say "FDDI probewatch " that would allow to do weekly and monthly statistical reports on FDDI traffic usage and error rates ? 2- does RMON cover FDDi or only Ethernet ? 3 - i saw in previous notes that there should be RMON in next Ethernet repeater firmware ? is this possible for FDDI too ( if yes to question 2)? Any experience is welcome thanks in advance PS : i also saw that P.Netview is capable to draw a map of an FDDI ring but we have to poll each conc or bridge for traffic details , and there doesnt seem to exist a global view of the whole ring operation .

1870.1 | RMON in repeaters... | NETCAD::GALLAGHER | Wed Jan 11 1995 09:15 | 27 | |
I can't answer your main question, but I'd like to clarify some things from your note. > 2- does RMON cover FDDi or only Ethernet ? The IETF RMON Working Group has not standardized FDDI statistics as they have Ethernet. FDDI is on their list of things to do, but it's not high on the list. I doubt that the lack of a standard will keep (has kept?) other companies from implementing RMON for FDDI. > 3 - i saw in previous notes that there should be RMON in next >Ethernet repeater firmware ? > is this possible for FDDI too ( if yes to question 2)? Careful. RMON (RFC1271) contains 9 groups. Among them are two groups: the Alarm group and the Event group. We will be shipping repeater and Hub Manager products with RMON Alarms and Event only. (The PacketProbe product implements all nine RMON groups.) RMON Alarms and Events allow users to set thresholds on a device's variables. When these thresholds are met or exceeded, events are generated. Traps can be sent as a results of the event. Regardless of whether a ProbeWatch for FDDI is planned, it's possible to include RMON Alarms and Events on FDDI products. There are no plans to do so. -Shawn |
