1792.0. "hot swap of modules and quick replay of configuration" by TLSE10::SELLES (Pierre-Jean - Toulouse -France) Fri Dec 16 1994 14:15
regarding any hot-swap of modules in a dechub900 with
the existing firmware and hubwatch releases , we know that , with the hub
running , the module interconnect has to be replayed "by hand" by a human
operator ;
with a customer ( the same as in note 1614 ) , we have imagined
some scenarii that could happen , in fact , for any customer :
1 - we remove a module ( lets say FDDI , but could be any other ) lets say
for replacing a failed PMD , and then we plug it again in the same slot :
if the MAM was able to retain somewhere an info of the kind
( slot , module type , MAc address of the module ) , then
it could consider that it can "automatically" replay the
interconnect , the module having retained its own parameters
and so no "human" intervention would be needed in this case
2- now the module has failed , so we remove it by another with a different
MAc address but of the same type ; if the inside parameters have already been
done ( this module was keeped on a shelf for quick replacement ) ,
then the MAM could also decide to replay the same interconnect
and no human intervention required
3 - now considering the backup/restore functionnality which should be
available for next release of hubwatch , the customer asked if the
following is going to be possible :
SAVE/RESTORE of a module parameters ( in French "a la TSM", or
TSM-like where you have a config file that can be played
on an existing module or a new module )
SAVE/restore of ONE module interconnect ( that is , per slot )
SAVE/restore of the whole LAn interconnect ;
SAVE/restore of the HUB manager itself
thanks for your enlightment about this features
PS : i know , the customer is getting paranoid ; but , they told me : imagine
a whole airport no able to let any plane get up in a little cold morning
because the whole airport staff is waiting for an operator to correctly
parameter and connect an fddi module for replacement ?

| All the following answers should be prefixed by a "maybe"...
.0: SAVE/RESTORE of a module parameters ( in French "a la TSM", or
TSM-like where you have a config file that can be played
on an existing module or a new module )
module-by-module, agent-by-agent.
.0: SAVE/restore of ONE module interconnect ( that is , per slot )
No. It's all a big ball o' wax.
.0: SAVE/restore of the whole LAn interconnect ;
Yes.
.0: SAVE/restore of the HUB manager itself
Yes.
