1782.0. "90C's in Hub 900 questions" by ODIXIE::RICHARDSON (Are we there yet??) Wed Dec 14 1994 11:20
I'm trying to configure a HUB 900 to do some "simple" bridging to FDDI.
Applications is an imaging application with multiple PC's accessing the
imaging Server. The PC's are currently configured in an old Ethernet
set-up with DEMPR's, DELNI's, etc and no FDDI exists.
What I would like to do is initially keep the PC lan cards the same
(thinwire) as there are about 100 of these and I don't think the
customer would be willing to replace them all with UTP. SO - for the
900, the only option is the 90C. I'd like to bridge about 20
PC's/segment, having 5 ethernets coming into the DECswitch 900EF and
connect the Imaging server to the FDDI port on the 900 EF (it' adapter
would of course have to be changed).
My questions are:
1. Can this be done? I've seen something somewhere where only port 3
of the 900EF supports thinwire. Does this make a difference here? I
thought Ethernet was EThernet, regardless of the type of wiring. I
obviously need 5 of the 6 ethernets to be talking to thinwire type
ethernets.
2. Can the 90C be connected to various ethernet channels on the 900
backplane? I was just wondering since it's not a 900 module and I'd
like each 90C to be a separate bridged segment.
3. Is an agent required to manage the 90C's? I'm assuming it is.
Thanks for the help/clarification
Cindy

1782.1 | 900EF support multiple FDDI devices? | ODIXIE::RICHARDSON | Are we there yet?? | Wed Dec 14 1994 11:39 | 5 |
| One more question:
Can I connect more than 1 FDDI device (server) to the FDDI port on the
900EF or do I need to put in a DECconcentrator in order to support
multiple FDDI adapters/devices?

| I just had a conversation with someone who has straightened me out.:
1) I DO need a DECconcentrator for ANY external FDDI device.
2) I Don't need the 90C's - just use some DECXM-AA maus for the AUI
ports and some BN25G cables and DETTR-AA's for the twisted pair ports
to convert all to thinwire.
3) An agent will NOT be needed
I think that covers it!

| If you have only a single DECswitch 900EF and 1 or 2 FDDI servers
then you can connect them straight into the A and B ports of the
DS 900EF. The A B ports will accept S ports. Just saves the cost
of a concentrator for simple congigueations.
