Hi I have a customer with a Synoptics 3000 hub, I believe just with 10BaseT repeaters in it to support a number of PC connections. He is now going to extend his LAN and needs at least 2 more hubs, with a variety of devices (Ethernet only) such as Terminal Servers, Local Bridges, and Repeaters. He is interested in using Synoptics 5000s because then he could manage all the hubs, including his existing 3000, with the same software. He has no management at the moment. We would like him to consider DEChub 900 but this would require a separate hub management system (Hubwatch) - unless anyone has any experience of being able to manage both from the same platform ? I doubt if he would consider Netview from the point of view of cost for such a small installation. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has faced this issue before. Regards Una

I thought the 5000 was positioned as a backbone hub of sorts. Seems like your customer will be paying through the nose to go that route to add some more ports. The only thing I might suggest is HUBwatch for Windows in conjunction with HP OpenView for Windows (Workgroup Node Manager = $1500). I don't know if SynOptics has made their PC management work with the latest HP kit or not. If they have, then you can run both applications on the same PC. Alternatively, you might pitch HUBwatch and ManageWorks on a PC. The new version of ManageWorks includes a good SNMP management capability. |
