1745.0. "FDDI and Novell 802.3" by TROOA::LEONG () Thu Dec 01 1994 14:07

I have a customer who has installed some 30+ DECswitch 900EF connected in a
FDDI backbone. They have turned on Novell 802.3 "translation". It works.

When they put and analyzer on the Ethernet, they found that the 802.3
packets came out of FDDI as a 802.2 SNAP packet as well as a 802.3 packet - two
packets came out for each one that went into FDDI.

They tried to filter out the 802.2 SNAP packet but it that caused both to
disappear.

Is this normal behaviour for 802.3 translation?

Is there any configuration changes in the 900EF we can do to eliminate the
extra packet?

I know it is not supported/recommended by Novell any more but they have
some 3000 such PCs and it takes time to convert.

Any information is appreciated.

What they should see on the Ethernet side is a RAW 802.3 packet only. I
think that's what you mean by 802.3 packet. Some nodes will broadcast
SAP announcements in multiple formats; that may be what they are seeing.

Bill,

Thanks for the quick response.

	Yes that's what I meant by 802.3.

I take it then that this only supposed to happen when the orginating
	packet is a broadcast.

Is this why when they try to filter the packet, they get neither
	through?

Yes, only broadcast, or multicast. If they filter, it will block all
    packets.
