1729.0. "< tree connection,external or internal ? >" by LEMAN::GAILLARDON () Tue Nov 29 1994 03:01

What I'm trying to do is the following (star topology)

From a central site, I need to connect 8 remote sites with Single Mode Fiber.
Therefore I need 4 conc900MX with 2 PMD-DEFXS SMFports(M) in each. The ring is
created within the backplane, A from the first concentrator and B from the
switch used for the external connection on the existing ring.
On the remote site, I need to use one conc900MX with one SMF PMD, the only way
to dispose of a SMF port as the Switch900EF CANNOT receive an SMF PMD.

      -------------connect to external ring---------
      ^						    ^
      |4x CONC 900MX		Switch 900EF	    | ring FDDI, MMF
      |	+-----------+		+--------------+    |
      +-|A M   M   B|-----------|A  ------   B |----+
	+--|---|----+		+--------------+        CENTRAL SITE
	   |   |only 2 SMF PMD per CONC900MX
	   |   |therefore 4 900MX + 1 switch 900EF in a HUB900
	   |   |
......... .|...|..............................................................
	   |   |		 DMHUB			REMOTE SITES (8)

	   |   | 10 Km SMF    *	+--------------+   *
	   |   +----------------|A  M M M M  B | CONC 900MX
	   |SMF		      *	+---|----------+   *	port A is SMF PMD

			      *	  | A ------ B | Switch900EF
			      *	  +------------+   *
			      **********************

Then the question: is the M to A backplane connection allowed or is the
external connection mandatory..?

Thanks for your help
Robert

    No and not necessarily. I've redrawn below. M ports will not be
    supported until Wave 3, Mar/Apr 95. You would configure, in the
    900MX, A to the front panel and B to the backplane. The 2 modules
    would then connect to a created FDDI channel.

    Dave,
    Thanks a lot

In Wave 3 it will be possible to configure this as:

      -------------connect to external ring---------
      ^						    ^
      |4x CONC 900MX		Switch 900EF	    | ring FDDI, MMF
      |	+-----------+		+--------------+    |
      +-|A M   M   B|-----------|A  ------   B |----+
	+--|---|----+		+--------------+        CENTRAL SITE
	   |   |only 2 SMF PMD per CONC900MX
	   |   |therefore 4 900MX + 1 switch 900EF in a HUB900
	   |   |
......... .|...|..............................................................
	   |   |		 DMHUB			REMOTE SITES (8)
	   |   |              **********************
	   |   | 10 Km SMF    *	+--------------+   *
	   |   +----------------|A  M M M M  B | CONC 900MX
	   |SMF		      *	+---|----------+   *	port A is SMF PMD
 	   +---- idem 7 times *	    |              *	port B & M are MMF
			      *   +-|----------+   *
			      *	  | S ------   | Switch900EF
			      *	  +------------+   *
			      **********************

Note that the backplane connection is M-S, not M-A.

For now, you can build your original configuration with external cables.

The configuration in .1 won't work because there is a peer violation:

   main ring M - A/B - A

The module in the middle would drop the B - A connection (peer) in
favor of the M - A (tree).

1729.4What firmware additions/changes?CGOS01::DMARLOWEHave you been HUBbed lately?Wed Nov 30 1994 17:594
    So does this mean that the Wave 3 firmware will allow the A B ports
    of the DS 900EF to be reconfigured as S ports?

    It means that the A will be an S, and the B an M, when both are
    directed into the backplane.

    We'll outline the whole story in another config memo in the future.
