1717.0. "Managing a DEFMM in a DEChub One?" by SVCVAX::RIHM (I'm the NRA!) Wed Nov 23 1994 08:41

I have a customer site which uses a DEChub ONE and a DECrepeater 900FP.
They are using this in several locations in their configuration. My
questions around managing this configuration.

The customer is feeding this building by bringing the fiber feed into
port 1 of the DEFMM. They then feed five other IDF's (going to DECbridge
90FL's). The AUI port on the DEChub ONE is unterminated.

1) Should the fiber feed to this building go through the DEChub ONE AUI
using a fiber MAU instead of directly into the DEFMM?

2) Is going directly into the DEFMM a configuration violation of any kind?

3) Do you have to use the DEChub ONE AUI port to be able to manage the
DEFMM with Hubwatch?

4) If the DECHUB AUI port is not being used, does it have to be terminated?

5) Should this configuration be able to be managed through Hubwatch? I have
placed an entry in the hubwatch_agents.dat file. I then make active the
DEFMM agent. Are there any restriction on using a community name other than
"public"? The last time I was at the site this didn't work, however, I have
gotten it to work in the office in a similar setup.

                                Thx,

1) Should the fiber feed to this building go through the DEChub ONE AUI

>> Doesn't matter. Save the cost of a MAU unless you are short of
      ports.

2) Is going directly into the DEFMM a configuration violation of any kind?

>> No. Just keep in mind repeater counts.

3) Do you have to use the DEChub ONE AUI port to be able to manage the
DEFMM with Hubwatch?

>> No. Any LAN connection will do. The best thing to do would be
to connect the MAC to the group/port pair that comes from the
      central site.

4) If the DECHUB AUI port is not being used, does it have to be terminated?

>> No. In fact it could power a thickwire transceiver also but again
>> you must be aware of repeater counts and the 2.8 KM max length
>> for a non-bridged LAN.

5) Should this configuration be able to be managed through Hubwatch? I have

>> Yes.

DEFMM agent. Are there any restriction on using a community name other than
"public"?

>> I don't think so. You may have to power cycle the module if you
>> change the community from public to something else. I haven't
>> had the time to check this out so I'm only guessing.

The last time I was at the site this didn't work, however, I have
gotten it to work in the office in a similar setup.

>> See 3) above or try again with community of PUBLIC.
