1673.0. "RMON for GIGAswitch?" by TRUCKS::EVANS_MA (It's all out there somewhere!) Wed Nov 09 1994 05:33

I'm working with one of my customers to implement two GIGAswitches into
their FDDI backbone. To obtain fault analysis, they are persuing the RMON
route. The question has arisen as to how RMON will be configured into a
GIGAswitch environment, specifically if RMON capability will be layered
onto the SCP, given the SCP is the common denominator for such a config.

They see the GIGAswitch and FDDI as being 'black holes' at present, not
necessarily knowing what utilisation is on a daily basis.

Anybody hearing the same requests?

Regards, Martin

Good question. You might want to cross-post this to the gigaSwitch
conference.

There are no plans that I am aware of to add RMON support to the
GIGAswitch/FDDI. I remember at least one person in the past asking a
similar question. (I just looked - see note 219.*)

As usual, in addition to voicing your opinion here and/or in the
GIGASWITCH notes conference, the traditional "call the product manager
with the business justification" will probably yield the most results.

You may have to get by with an external FDDI probe, although there
would probably be no way to switch it to the ring you want to monitor.
