1625.0. "DECswitch 900EF and SMF" by DPDMAI::DAVIES (Mark, SCA Area Network Consultant) Thu Oct 27 1994 11:58

My customer is going to have SMF connecting his different buildings in
the city of Oklahoma City. The SMF comes from a vendor stringing fiber
thruout the city to provide MAN capabilities.

They are going to use DEChub 900s connected together FDDI as the
backbone and then ethernet (shared and personal) to the desktop.

The current DECswitch 900EF only supports MMF. I am aware that the
current SMF PMD for the DECconcentrator 900MX has a fiber loop which
requires it to take up the space of 2 ports on the concentrator. I am
also aware that a "new" SMF PMD is coming in the near future and it is
smaller and only requires a single port "worth of space".

What I am getting to is the following question:

Will the DECswitch 900EF support SMF when the new PMD is available?

If not, the customer is very aware that he will have to use up a slot
and $$$ to put a DECconcentrator 900MX into each DEChub 900.

He asks me why we have modular FDDI PMDs for all the other backbone
products (GIGAswitch and DECconcentrator) and not for the 900EF. My
only thought is that the current SMF PMD will not fit.

Trying to save a sale in OKC.

    Thanks,

    Mark

1625.1DECswitch 900EF won't support SMF in HUB config, but...NETCAD::BATTERSBYThu Oct 27 1994 12:2213
The MMF PMD's and the SMF PMD's do not share the same PC
board footprint. There are also a lot of other physical and
technical reasons why mod pmds were not used in the 900EF design.
Things physically would not fit, without a lot of other design
compromises amongst other things. So the 900EF module will not
support the SMF while plugged into a HUB. However, the 900EF *will*
support in the next wave release, the SMF PMD's when used
in conjunction with the new High End docking station (the proper
option name escapes me for the moment) that has mod pmds. This is
the same version of the docking station used in conjunction with the
PEswitch 900TX when configured in stand-alone.
