I'm trying to register a DECbridge 90, to be managed via DECmcc V1.3... One
DECbridge 90 works fine, the other fails with a communication
interrupted message (similar to node 256). The DECbridge 90 that works
fine is a:

FPROM V3.1 �1991,93 Digital Equip Corp 5-APR-93
I can register the DECbridge as a station under MCC, and do console
connects in NCP, but I can't register it as a bridge which uses RBMS...
I've appended a IRIS printout of the attempt to register the bridge.
Starts out fine, then looks like the bridge stops responding... Is
there a fix????

| I'll wager a guess; the last RBMS request sent to the bridge is a READ of the
NTP table (code 7). According to the RBMS spec I have, this is not supported by
the DECbridge 90/90FL. It may be supported by the other DECbridge and LANbridge
devices, I do not know.
I have no idea why you could register one bridge and not another. Both should
have failed.

| I'd open an IPMT case..either the DECmcc station is faulty and
tripping a bug in the bridge by sending an unsupported request, or the
bridge code is flawed. Can you/have you tried managing this unit with
HUBwatch vs. DECmcc?
There is newer DEWGx code available than 3.1, not yet released.
Unfortunately there are also no Release Notes fully describing the
scope of enhancements/fixes. The NPSS folks are the maintainers of this
product set. Try contacting them.

No I don't have HUBwatch loaded at the customer site, since they
have no DECagents... While the registration fails, when I look at the
bridges via mcc command line, MCC sees the bridge as registered??? I
can also query the bridge for forwarding database entries (which is
what I was attempting to get...). So I guess I'm OK for now...
Do you know a contact in the NPSS group?

FYI, I don't think you'll find that any of the firmware images later than V3.1
will resolve this problem. This seems like a bug in MCC. It should not be
querying the DECbridge 90 for the NTP table or it should know that an error
response to that query is acceptable for a DECbridge 90 (and continue with the
registration process). I know nothing about how MCC does device registration,
so you'll have to ask the MCC folks for more information. This note has a
pointer to the MCC notes conference.

| I have been able to register -some- of the DECbridge 90's at my sites,
which are all running version 3.1 code. The LAN Autotopoly of MCC will
crash, but then it crashes for TransLANs, and CISCO's too.
The SPD does not list any of these bridges, so I would guess that they
are not supported, even though they DO have an ICON created for the
bridge. I have found that if you DO get one of these random bridges
to get registed in MCC, you will NEVER be able to deregister it, or get
it out of your domain.
I have had to complete delete my domains, and start over again, and the
bridge STILL affects the FCL command line during show bridge * commands
long after I tried to deregister it. I would avoid using MCC on the
DEChub stuff, unless you use the TCP/IP through the agent. That seems
to behave a little better, unless you are trying to launch HUBwatch to
a specific entity. I still can't get that to work for me.
It looks like MCC stopped development on any of the newer products,
since the tool is end-of-life. It's a shame, cause it's all I have
seen at many customer sites for managing their networks, and the ONLY
tool that can effectively manage a DECnis for non-power users.

| One problem I see in 1598.0 is that bridge is returning the
"SW Implementation Type" as a DEWGF (fiber) but at the same
time the "ROM Implementation Type" is reporting itself as a
DEWGB. From the other header info it looks like it's really
DEWGB. I don't know about the internals of MCC but in my
experience this conflicting information has caused problems
such as those mentioned in 1598.0 (and the ones in note 256.*)
You said some bridges work ok and others don't. Do the ones
that work have V1 ROMs and the ones that fail V2 ROMS??
The ROM version is printed just before the hardware address
when you connect using NCP. It's usually either V1.14 or V2.1
