1576.0. "Problems with Packetprobe - all DOA" by FSAEUR::RYE () Fri Oct 14 1994 11:10

Hello..

  I have recently tried to use the Packprobe 90's for network utiliztion stuff
and all of the probes that I have tried have failed to initialize. Since it is
very unlikely that all four of these devices could be DOA, I'm looking for any
information on how to set up these devices.

  When I connect the packetprobe to its standalone power supply, only the
DC okay light comes on. The port is unresponsive, we have build a cable
acording to the user manual since we didn't have the correct connector.

  I have also installed each of these module in an active Hub900 backplane with
the same results in the LED's.

  It is my understanding from the manual that the network okay light should
come on soon after power up. I have tried the thin wire port both with a
terminated T Connector, and with t connector installed in a live PC network.

  According to the manual the only option is to replace the packetprobe.

  Any thoughts, suggestions.

  I have called Support on this issue and they cannot resolve it either.

Thanks

Don

I have an idea that in this conference there is a note that says that the
LEDs do only show power for some reason. Having said that, a colleague spent
quite some time on site with just the same problem - even using a breakout
box, he couldn't get the console to work.

1576.2Console connectivity problem ?GENIE::GMUEREWed Oct 19 1994 09:2615
I had the same problems with my first Packetprobe installation.

First, the story with the network LED is irritating. When you start the
installation the network LED is off.

Second, I did not get the console running because I used a wrong RJ45
to RS232 9-Pin adapter. When I powered on/off the probe I got some strange
characters on the console screen. It may be a problem of a wiring straight
or crossed in the adapter, but I am not quite sure. After I replaced the
adapter I got the console prompt and all worked fine.

Hopes this helps

1576.3Still trying, more dead probes.FSAEUR::RYEWed Oct 19 1994 09:548
Thanks for the information. We have just received more packetprobe 90's and
the reult was the same. Hopefully our logistics people can get the right
connector as building one didn't relieve the issue. Perhaps the pinouts in
the book are wrong.

Thanks
Don

1576.5Adapter is a necessity.FSAEUR::RYESun Oct 23 1994 07:317
  The probes are now working, it seems the adapter is quite necessary and
the modem control signals must be supplied. The manual should be updated
with this imformation and the probe should come with the adaptor since it is
quite disfunctional without it. Lessons learned.

    Yes, I had the same problem with my 6 DECpacketprobes. It is a real
    pain...

    The adapters are about $5 each; we do not know which to include.
    DB9 to MMJ	(H8571J) for DEC terminals
    DB9 to MJ8/RJ45 for many other devices
    DB9 to DB9 null modem cable for connecting an IBM PC using term emulation

    I do not want to add $15 to every probe we ship; by the way we sell
    thousands of DECbrouter 90's, which has the same DB9 interface. Does
    anyone know if it ships with an adapter?
