1549.0. "Nonfatal error in DECserver 90TL" by ZPOVC::DAIV01::HENDRA (Seeks 'enlightenment') Tue Oct 11 1994 09:38

    Hi,

I have a problem as follows:
We are installing some modules into a DEChub 900, three of which
are DECserver 90TL. But the screen on the DEChub keeps showing
"Nonfatal error" message when it polls the DECservers.

Furthermore, whenever I click on it through HUBwatch 3.x, it says
    "No response from agent".
When I do "show server" on one of the DECservers, it says:

    	DECserver 90TL v1.1 BL44G - 10A LAT 5.1 ROM 2.0.0 Uptime...
        ...
        ...etc

I configured the DECserver with the following commands:

    	CHANGE SNMP STATE ENABLED
CHANGE SNMP COMMUNITY PUBLIC GET ENABLED
CHANGE SNMP COMMUNITY PUBLIC GETNEXT ENABLED
CHANGE SNMP COMMUNITY PUBLIC SET ENABLED

We gave it an IP address of 192.9.200.214 and a subnet mask of
255.255.255.0, whereas our HUBwatch PC has an address of
192.9.200.166 with the same netmask. Furthermore, I have added
the agent definition for it in HUBwatch.

So actually I have 2 questions here:

    1. Why the error "Nonfatal error"? Anything to do with firmware
       upgrade, or installation error?

    2. Why the error "No response from agent"? Any clue?

    Hendra

The nonfatal error is expected in DS90TL's not running NAS because they do
not respond to the hub manager's polling.

Read the HUBwatch Installation and Configuration manual. It explains how
to set up DECserver 90TLs.

Oh, what the heck. It's a nice day...

1549.2We have done it, but...ZPOVC::DAIV02::HENDRASeeks 'enlightenment'Tue Oct 11 1994 22:1613

We have installed an image of NAC9IMAGE130 in our OSF/1-based
Alpha system. We have also configured the DECserver 90TL
and registered the agent in HUBwatch. But, still the same
message "Nonfatal error" on the HUB900 screen, and
"No response from agent" on HUBwatch screen?

Any clue? Could the problem stem from the OSF/1 system?

    Hendra,

Does a ping to the DECserver 90TL work from the HUBwatch system?

Is the DECserver 90TL in your agents file, with both the IP address
and MAC address?

What rev of the MAM (hub manager) firmware are you running? I believe
that the latest version changed the error message to something that
sounds less serious (still means that the module is not talking).

1549.6DECserver 90TL: UNKNOWNZPOVC::DAIV02::HENDRASeeks 'enlightenment'Thu Oct 20 1994 10:4018

Oh, sorry for being so late to answer.
The previous problem was solved already. We just reset the
DEChub 900, upgrade the hub firmware to 3.0, and redid several
things on the DECserver and now it's running just fine.

On the HUBwatch side, I just redefined the agents. It's now
running fine, too - I mean, everything is now manageable.

But, there is something that still bothers me... It's that the
DEChub screen now shows a message "Unknown" when it polls the
DECserver 90TL. What could be the problem then?

    Any help appreciated.

The DECserver90TL software does not respond to the status polls from
the Hub Manager (the ROM code does, which is how we know that it is a
90TL). When a module stops responding, the manager displays 'Unknown'
    for its status.

If you think this makes the module look bad, direct your comments to
the terminal server product managers (you can find out who they are in
    TOOK::TERMINAL_SERVERS conference)
