1516.0. "DEChub 900 - no power to slot one" by NCMAIL::SCHEID () Tue Oct 04 1994 08:27

We recently loaned a DEChub 900 with (2) Power Supplies and one
DECrepeater 900TM. Additional repeaters and power supplies along
with a DECswitch 900EE will be added shortly.

When I was onsite installing HUBwatch, the customer told me of a
weird problem. When they first installed the 900 hub with 2 power
supplies and single 900 repeater in slot one, the 900 hub would not
recognize the card, (displayed message unknown card in slot - 1) nor
would the card get any power... they moved the card to any other slot
    2-8 and everything was fine.

I know that power in the 900 backplane goes from slot 8 to slot 1, but
that still makes no sense since there is nothing else in the
    backplane...

I also made sure all firmware levels were up to rev...

    any thoughts ...

Not sure of the history of your DEChub 900, but it may be in need of
some stiffeners. These are 2 pieces of metal which get placed inside
the box to tighten things up. How's that for a technical description:-)
We have seen these work miracles with some hubs experiencing problems
with unpowered modules. The operation is simple. You remove the back of
the hub, put the stiffeners in place (no screws etc. required), and
then put the back of the hub on again. Perhaps someone could tell from
your hubs serial number if it already has the stiffeners or not and
give you futher details (ie part number, etc.). I believe that the
part number shows up on a BOM which was entered to a recent note. If
you have the stiffeners then the investigation goes on...

    Regards,
    Bob
