1498.0. "100baseT is here!!" by WELSWS::GREENR (Curiosity Killed The Cat) Thu Sep 29 1994 05:24

I thought it time to start a discussion on 10BaseT/X -

I for one think we are making a very big mistake not developing any Hub
products that will use this technology.
From the Systems Integrators and customers I have spoke to, they are
all looking for hubs that will shortly support 100baset. Synoptics are
making big noises about their new 28000 switch, their VAR's are doing
the same and the customer base has responded by placing large volumes
of orders for a product that hasn't even shipped yet. I have tried to
compete with GIGAswitch but it is not in the same league pricewise or
    from a functionality viewpoint. A 14 port 10/100 switch costs 18K
pounds in the UK, a 14 port GIGaswitch would be 3 times that. Now that
Intel and 3com have announced 100baset cards for less than 300 pounds a
time (FDDI is just under 1k) we just are not competing. The above buzz
word is "Virtualisation", customers are really keen on this.
We really need a better story than just Personal Ethernet and TP-PMD,
if we don't react soon then we will miss the boat.

there is no mistake being made. we are working on it. it is not
happening over night. we need MACs, phy interfaces, magnetics,...

synoptics will be making noise for a while. the technology didn't
come together and they won't be shipping until into the next year.
1498.2Did I hear wrong ?WELSWS::GREENRCuriosity Killed The CatMon Oct 03 1994 17:2213
    Gee ????
Perhaps I heard wrong, but at the Network Academy in the UK it was
stated that there were no current plans to put 100baset into the
DEChub. Just because the PC NIC group were doing it didn't mean the hub
    group would.
Now 9 months ago we were told that we were looking at the posibility of
doing something should the market accept it, since then there has been
on further mention until two weeks ago when it was said that there were
    no immediate plans.
Whats happening, did I hear wrong ?
3com have just announced there intention to ship some products within
the next 3 months including a nic at less than $300.

1498.3Not real, but I vote we position the damn thing!PTOJJD::DANZAKPittsburgher Tue Oct 04 1994 08:2027
One or two things that I'd ask my customer is:

    - How are you going to do 10/100 bridging and extend the LAN,
there is no standard defined for it today

    - Speaking of LAN extensions, are you going to use a twisted pair
backbone for your campus at 100MBps?

    - Oh you may want FDDI/Fiber for that? How are you going to do the
      100/100 connection (Ethernet to FDDI)

    - If they are talking about speed - ask when the last time was that
they MEASURED the network. Can they provide any stats on which
to base a decision? If not, hell, if they want to spend money
sell them consulting to make a SMART decision.

If they really believe 100-base-T is here, alive, viable...sell them a
    bridge in Brooklyn.

    Regards,

^--who thinks that economics and religion will drive this - NOT
technology and that engineering DESPERATELY needs to write a position
paper more eloquently articulating the technical realities to dissuade
customers...we could do a 'stitch in time' or wait around, do nothing
and then swim upstream like we've done in the past....
