1492.0. "Cure for S l o w probewatch on windows" by STOWOA::PERLMUTTER () Wed Sep 28 1994 14:48
I used the windows version of Probewatch to collect traffic data off a
customer network. Moving between screens was *painfully* s l o w.
I spoke to Jack Forrest about this problem. Probewatch makes a name
service (DNS call) before most operations. Typically the probes are not
registered in DNS so this has to time out before the data would appear.
There is a switch in the pwtcp.ini that tells IP to look first in the
host file for names references. Setting this switch improved
performance drastically. Below is the relevent section of this file
[DNR]
Domain = ogo.dec.com ; name of local domain (eg,
; abc.xyz.com). No default.
NameServer0 = 16.124.224.153 ; IP address of first name server to
; query. No default.
; Up to three name server addresses
; can be defined. The last two are
; optional.
Heuristics = 1 ; Tell DNR how to look up names.
; Not required.
; 0=Network first, HOSTS. file second.
; 1=HOSTS. first, Network second.
; default is 0.
