1490.0. "DECmau 900TL & DECrepeater 900TL/SL" by TAVIS::ALTER () Wed Sep 28 1994 11:23

Hi
I am not a token ring expert and I need few quick answers (if it is not
the right note - let me know).

1. The DECmau 900TL can "connect up to 64 end stations in a single
   tree".
   a. How is it being done? do I connect a mau to each port of the mau?
   b. What is a "single tree"?
   c. What is lobe?
2. When the DECmau 900TL is working as DEChub ONE, it has a RING IN/RING
   OUT ports in the back.
   a. Where are the RING IN/RING OUT ports when it is mounterd to the
      DEChub 900 MultiSwitch?
   b. What bus is the card sitting on?
   c. Since it is a small module, why can't it be connected to the
      DEChub 90?
   d. How many token ring buses are in the DEChub 900 MultiSwitch?
3. the DECrepeater 900TL/SL are RING IN/RING OUT ports.
   a. Where do I need the DECrepeater 900TL/SL cards?
   b. Is this card the RING IN/RING OUT to the DECmau 900TL and this
means that each one or more DECmau 900TL needs one DECrepeater
      900TL/SL (for each bus)?

thanks
Ilan Alter

!I am not a token ring expert and I need few quick answers (if it is not
!the right note - let me know).
!

I'll give it a shot.

!1. The DECmau 900TL can "connect up to 64 end stations in a single
! tree".
! a. How is it being done? do I connect a mau to each port of the mau?

daisy chain the trunk ports on the back covers of the MAUs, connecting RO of
one module to RI of the upstream MAU. the reference might also have been made
to 8 modules in the 8 slot DEChub 900.

Token Ring has a limit of 256 nodes in a 16 MHz ring. the number is smaller for
a 4 MHz ring. I do not know the architectural number, but 72 is commonaly
quoted.

! b. What is a "single tree"?

I'll guess the answer and say " single non-bridged non-active retimed ring"

! c. What is lobe?

Lobes are refered to ports that connect to stations and trunks as ports that
connect to higher order or peer units.

!2. When the DECmau 900TL is working as DEChub ONE, it has a RING IN/RING
! OUT ports in the back.
! a. Where are the RING IN/RING OUT ports when it is mounterd to the
! DEChub 900 MultiSwitch?

they are on the back cover of the small dechub one and thus not available.

! b. What bus is the card sitting on?

bus in the dechub one?

! c. Since it is a small module, why can't it be connected to the
! DEChub 90?

it is a DEChub 900 module. the dechub 90 is an ethernet only hub.

! d. How many token ring buses are in the DEChub 900 MultiSwitch?

Two dedicated token rings. the channels on the matrix could be used to provide
more channels.

!3. the DECrepeater 900TL/SL are RING IN/RING OUT ports.
! a. Where do I need the DECrepeater 900TL/SL cards?

to go long distances or change media type from the hub with DTMAUs in it.

! b. Is this card the RING IN/RING OUT to the DECmau 900TL and this
! means that each one or more DECmau 900TL needs one DECrepeater
! 900TL/SL (for each bus)?
!

in the hub: yes

consider the DECmau 900TH. a large box 24 lobe ports, RI/RO trunks. works on
the 2 dedicated rings on teh 48 pin connector.

I appreciate it very much.
I hope that asking some more details concerning your answers will be
OK with you and wont cause too much work for you.

Does it mean that I can connect ONLY 8 stations to each DECmau 900TL
card which is in the DEChub 900MS?
and if I need more Token Ring ports I can either:
1. connect few modules in the DEChub 900 on the same bus.
2. connect few DEChub one modules (using the back RI/RO connectors).

what are higher order or peer units?

Just to be sure that I understood correctly - If the DECmau 900TL is
connected to the DEChub 900 via one of the internal Token rings buses
- there is no RI/RO ports available.

I meant when it is in the DEChub 900 - how do I tell the card which bus
is the card sitting on - do I use the HUBEATCH?
is it true that one bus is 4MB and the other is 16MB and this can not be
reconfigured?

How? as far as I know there are no cards available for the 14 flexable
channels....

What is this card? is it a new one which I didn't hear of yet?

thanks for your efforts.
