1459.0. "decrepeater 900tm rebooting" by KERNEL::ANSONR () Wed Sep 21 1994 08:51

    Hello,
I've customer who uses Decrepeaters 900TM running the latest
firmware in the hub1. Every so often the repeaters reboot for no
apparent reason - he knows this by the up time shown in hubwatch.

Can anybody help in pointing me in the right direction to diagnose this
problem. He only runs IPX through the repeaters.

    thanks

    Rich.

Please find out what version of firmware his repeaters are running.
Also, enter here a copy of his repeaters' error log entries. For future
reference please provide this type of information whenever you are
reporting any type of repeater problems. It is always going to be the
    first question we ask.

For what its worth, DECrepeater 900TM firmware version 1.0G has a
couple of known bugs that cause the repeater to crash. These were
fixed in firmware version 1.1. If the repeaters are not running
version 1.1 firmware they should probably be upgraded. Also there are
a couple of other relatively recent notes in this conference that
describe crashing DECrepeaters. We are still investigating the cause of
    these crashes.

    Regards,

    Thanks for the answer Rich,

I have been involved with this problem posted by Richard. The details
    you requested are below.

The customer has 2 repeaters both running the same firmware/software.

Both IPX servers reported the following message:-

The IPX Internet appears to be down (no "Im alive" packets received for
a second). There was then a lapse of 11 seconds until the servers could
    see the network again.

Let me know if there is any other info you require,

    Regards,

    Jon

I have a few more questions. .0 states that the repeaters reset every
so often. How often is every so often?

You posted one error log entry for each repeater. Does each repeater
really only have one error log entry? If not please enter all error
log entries per repeater, even if they are duplicates.

These repeaters are running SW version 1.1.0. When you originally
received these units were they running this SW version or did you have
    to upgrade them?

Approximately how often do you do management set commands to these
repeaters? That is, how often do you enable/disable a port, configure
security, assign a name to a port, etc. How much does the current
repeater configuration differ from factory default settings? That is,
how many ports are disabled, how many ports have security enabled, how
many ports are assigned names, etc..

If you have not already done so, please reset the repeaters with
factory defaults and see if that has any effect on the repeater resets.

    Thanks,

    Rich

Before we upgraded to V1.1 the repeaters were crashing about once every
14 hours. Since then they have been doing it about twice a week
(however they went down 4 times over the weekend). They tend to go down
overnight when there are no users on the network.

The configuration is stable (customer not doing any sets etc) and the
repeaters are only looked at with hubwatch occasionally. The only
difference from the default settings is that they have defined an IP
address on the repeater. The entries I posted in the error log were the
    only ones available.

I have requested the customer factory reset the Repeaters.

    Thanks,

    Jon
