DIGITAL EXTENDS BREADTH OF STACKABLE OFFERINGS BY BRINGING ENTERPRISE
FUNCTIONALITY TO LOW-END ENVIRONMENTS AT AFFORDABLE PRICE
New Ethernet Repeater and Reduced-Price Management Module Provide
Intelligent, Flexible Solutions
From Jamie Pearson, (508) 493-2149
MAYNARD, MA -- August 29, 1994 -- Digital Equipment Corporation's Network
Product Business today took steps to bring new enterprise functionality to
its low-end networking offerings. Digital announced an addition to its
intelligent DEChub family, the DECrepeater 90TS, for small workgroups and
departments within large enterprises. In addition, Digital announced more
affordable hub management by reducing the price of network management
hardware by 34%, from $2255 to $1495.
Digital's DEChub products are aimed at the growing market for low-cost,
"intelligent stackable" network solutions that provide a level of
functionality formerly associated only with high-end hubs. Until recently,
the network market was divided into low-functionality stackables, for
smaller workgroups, driven by price per port, and high-end, high-capacity
hubs, driven by functionality and performance.
"While other network vendors are racing to put high-end intelligence into
their stackable products, Digital, with its single integrated DEChub
family, has offered intelligent stackable network solutions for some time,"
said William L. Maro, vice president, Network Product Marketing and
Engineering. Maro added,
"Unlike customers who have other vendors' products, Digital customers are
not bound solely to stackables or to hub solutions they quickly outgrow.
Our uniquely flexible DEChub family allows modules to operate as
stand-alone devices, be stacked with other modules, or be integrated into
low- or high-density hubs, protecting the customer's investment."
High Functionality Ethernet Repeater
A true eight-port 10BaseT repeater, the DECrepeater 90TS combines full SNMP
management and Ethernet per-port security for building PC LANs or
interconnecting to larger Ethernet LANs. At $1155, the module provides
high functionality and repeater management at an affordable price.
With built-in SNMP management, the DECrepeater 90TS provides detailed
statistical monitoring and control at the port level. The module can be
managed by HUBwatch, a point and click hub management application, from
either a PC or a workstation. The DECrepeater 90TS's port-level security
provides protection against both broadcast intrusion and eavesdropping,
thus preventing the transmission of data to and from unauthorized devices.
In the future, Digital will provide additional functionality to the
DECrepeater 90TS through firmware upgrades.
The DECrepeater 90TS is part of Digital's family of Ethernet repeaters,
which offer between eight and 32 ports; a variety of standards-based media,
including 10BaseT, 10BaseFL fiber, shielded twisted pair, ThinWire, and
ThickWire.
Like all DEChub modules, the DECrepeater 90TS can be configured as a
stand-alone solution, can be 'racked and stacked' as new users are added to
the network and can snap into both the DEChub 90 and the DEChub 900
MultiSwitch. This unique capability allows users to extend the network and
increase functionality while preserving their original investment.
One of the early users of the DECrepeater 90TS is TAFE New South Wales
(NSW), provider of vocational education and training in Australia with more
than 400,000 students enrolling each year. It has 152 sites connected to
its network, which vary in size from campuses with 100 students to centers
with 1500 staff and 35,000 students. Many TAFE campuses are in remote
locations, furtherest some 1000 kilometres from the support center.
"TAFE NSW needed a solution that could be deployed into any of our sites
regardless of their size", said Michael Anderton, TAFE's communications
manager. "The DECrepeater 90TS units were chosen because they were
scalable, flexible, secure and easily managed." TAFE NSW is in the process
of installing 400 DECrepeater 90TS's across the network.
Affordable Management for DEChub 90 Modules
Digital has also reduced the price of its DECagent 90 SNMP management
module by 34%, from $2255 to $1495. The price reduction of the DECagent
allows users to easily upgrade from simple connectivity to a fully managed
solution.
The features of the DECagent 90 include graphical MIB II-compliant SNMP
in-band and out-of-band management; the ability to support multiple
communities and stand-alone modules; enterprise traps including security,
error, population, and status change; and nonvolatile error logging of
errors, upgrades, and factory resets.
The DECagent 90 is used in conjunction with the HUBwatch management
application. "This new price makes it even easier and more affordable for
customers to manage multiple DEChub devices," said Maro. A single DECagent
90 can manage multiple repeaters, access servers, bridges and routers in a
variety of stand-alone and DEChub 90-based configurations across an
extended LAN, resulting in significant management cost savings.
When combined with the limited time $1995 DEChub starter pack offer (an
eight-slot DEChub 90 and three DECrepeater 90T UTP modules) which is being
extended through December 30, 1994, Digital provides users with an
exceptionally low-price point for full function manageable connectivity.
The extra five slots in the DEChub 90 allow plenty of room to expand by
adding more modules. As users' networking needs grow, the modules can be
removed from the DEChub 90 and snapped into the high-end DEChub 900
MultiSwitch.
The DECrepeater 90TS, the DECagent 90, and the network starter package are
all available now.
