1343.0. "DB90FL, Spanning Tree Disabled" by CSC32::J_SHUMWAY () Wed Aug 24 1994 13:38

Customer has standalone DB90FL using the thick and thin ports. The workgroup
side consists of approx. 10 nodes running DECnet Phase IV with area routers
in use on each side of DB90FL. The thick wire side is mostly IBM with IBM6611
RISC based systems that bridge/route to token ring. The IBM side currently
has "issues" being worked. When the problem events happen on the IBM side
the DB90FL appears to lock up (LED status unknown) and there is no DECnet
reachability and Lat disconnects are seen. Customer has disabled Spanning
Tree on the DB90FL assuming this problem was due to the number of bridges
and the ongoing "issues" on the thickwire segment. This did not change the
scenerio. Both LAN segments appear clean as far as send/receive type failures.
With the DB90FL in Flood Mode the same problems are seen.

What does a DB90FL do when Spanning Tree is disabled? Does it ignore all
ST packets and forward normally or will it wait for ST to be stable
before resuming forwarding? Customer states that in some cases he has had
to stop/restart DECnet before reachability resumed. VMS 5.5 - 6.1, DB90FL 3.1

Please provide a pointer if there is a better place to ask...

My memory is a bit fuzzy on this, but I believe that when Spanning Tree
is disabled the DECbridge 90 forwards all traffic _except_ spanning
tree multicasts. If this sounds dangerous to you, then you have
    correctly analyzed the situation.
