| There probably isn't one place or repository where a FAQ or such
is where all technical questions will be answered.
I'd give a whirl at putting your (your customers), questions down
and posting them in here. There may be reasons, due to complexity
of the answer, or because of some propriety, that some of them
can't be answered. However I'd hazard that most of them could be
answered either on-line or off line by folks in here.

| Ok. I'll ask the questions:
1. The DEChub900 needs retiming chip (card?).
were is it installed? on each card? is it part of the backplane?
is there any backup for this chip?
2. When will there be an ATM card to the 900? I need a pointer to the
letter of declaration.
3. token ring questions:
a. If a port in a mau is being cut of due to beaconing detaction,
how is this port being activated again?
p.s. what is beaconing?
b. will the MAU continue to work as a passive MAU when a power failure
occure?
c. the customer wants an extantion ports to connect to external chips.
which ports and chips are supported? Are they managed with the HUBwatch?
d. Do we support the EARLY TOKEN RELEASE?
e. When one of the lines RING IN/OUT falls, will the hau detect it and go to
backup lines?
4. Do the DECpacketprob 90 supports toen Ring?
is the connection to the segment being done outside the unit (since it is a
90 module and not 900)?
5. when is SNMP-2 will be supported? I need the letter of declaration.
6. Is it possible to make trap filtering in the card itself in order that not
all the events will be sent to the management station?
7. Can the management station find the MAC address of the stations connected to
TR including station which are connected to passive MAU?
Is there a passive MAU module?

No separate retiming needed - it's built in to the repeaters.

the answer to b) is Yes.

There is a token ring version in development, but I don't know the
availability date.

All 90 modules work in a 900. (There is no token ring in the 90, so I
expect that the token ring probe will get a 900 number).

No offense intended, but requests for dates are _not_ technical
questions; they need to go through product managment, and we just won't
answer them in the Notes file.

HUBwatch V4.0 (OSF/1, Windows) will support a token ring map as part of the
MAXMAU management, and will supply the MAC address of each station on the ring.

Not scheduled yet. If it's important to you or your customer,
make sure product management knows about it.

It's possible. We haven't had any demand for this feature. It seems
to me that trap filtering is the job of the network management station.
It's not like traps generate a lot of traffic.

The DECpacketprobe 900RR is currently in Pilot Build in Mfging.
However, we are about 5-6 weeks away from shipping the new
version of PROBEwatch for Windows to support it.
Since it is a 900 module, and it is Token Ring only, it
does not work in a DEChub 90, but it is a 90 size module
and will work standalone with an external power supply.
Even in the hub, you will have to cable it to a MAU port
on the ring that you want to monitor.

No retiming module is needed.

The DECpacketprobe90 monitors the internal thinwire segment. To be
useful, the internet thinwire segment is must be connected to a network.

To keep Mike from getting a flood of mail regarding SNMP V2 support,
the short answer is that we will wait until customer demand reaches
critical mass. There's no evidence today that SNMP V2 support would
help us sell significantly more hubs. So we are prioritizing our
work around better opportunities.

when a settable timer expires.
! p.s. what is beaconing?
beaconing is when a station on the ring recognizes that it has been 2.6
seconds since the last time it was an token go by and starts a ring
purge process. if the ring purge times out, it sends out Claim token
frames. if this times out, it starts sending beacon frames. the
beacon frame fingers the upstream neighbor. they de-insert and start a
selftest check on their lobe segment.

please re-word question. it is not clear.

we use the TI eagle chipset. it supports early token release. the
adapters that they have would also have to support early token release
for it to be meaningful. note: ETR is only for 16 Mbit networks.

no. in order to do this a third repeater block is needed and it was
not implimented.

use the backup paths.
