1284.0. "DB900 as IP service ?" by BACHUS::VANDENBERGHE () Fri Aug 05 1994 12:25

    Hi,
    I read somewhere that a DECbridge 900MX delivers IP services for
    the MAM but per default the DECbridge has no IMB connections.
    So through the MAM console menu I can configure the In band Management to
    be perforemd from the slot of the DB900 but then, is the thinwire
    connection mandatory to access the MAM or will it be possible for me to
    access the MAM through HUBwatch from any port of the DB900 (DB900 with
    factory config)?

    Thanks,
    Robert
    NB: I don't have a DB900 to test that

    Robert,

    	If your DECbridge 900MX is setup as your IP Services module, you can
        connect to any of the DECbridge 900MX (factory default settings) ports
        and get to the MAM via IP Services. This will allow you to
        configure your hub further using HUBwatch.

    Bob
1284.2The MAM talks directly to all modules on it's own bus.MSDOA::REEDJohn Reed @CBO, DTN:367-6463, KB4FFE, SouthEastTue Aug 09 1994 18:0210
    To be sure that I understand, I assume from the response in .1 that the
    DB900MX module will be communicating with the world through it's default
    media ports (front panel ports only), and communicating to the MAM
    through it's management bus port. There is NO WAY for the MAM to
    communicate over any of the DATA buses on the backplane. This in fact
    is the reason for IP services being provided by modules in the hub, so
    that the hub is not locked into any specific network technology.

    JR,

    	That sums it up well. The MAM doesn't have a MAC of its own, so an
        IP Services module provides it with one. In-band messages for the MAM
        get sent along the Management Bus by the IP Services module.
