1211.0. "Differences between router and HUb900 in a collpased backbone config." by MXOV06::LERIOS () Tue Jul 12 1994 14:49

Hi,

We are working in a couple of projects where the idea of the people in charge
of them is to build a collapsed backbone based on a router (If you think this
sounds like Wellflet approach you are right). The idea in both projects
is to have a "CENTRAL BOX" as a connection matrix. In such environments are
going to exist between 6 and 9 LAN's (Ethernet LAN's) and obviously some
WAN links (Frame Relay and X.25 links). The protocols used in these cases are
IP and IPX.

Taking in account that some users in a specific building (Certain LAN) are
going to be users of a server located in other LAN the router must have some
ports configured as bridge ports using some filters in order to povide such
communication.

The customers think in the following way:
" Taking in account we are going to have several LAN's which we want to
define as different subnetworks then the central router in the best option
to do this"

Well the questions here are the followings:
- What are the differences between a collpased backbone configuration based on
a router and a solution based on our DEChub900 (with a DECbrige 900MX)?

- What about the differences between the way that the interconnection of the
different LAN's is done between the router and the DEChub 900 backplane?

- I know we can offer a similar solution based on a DECnis configuration,
however the cost could be a big issue in such opportunities.

- My feeling is we must go with a HUB 900 based on solution. What about
adiditional features as latency, bridging switch capability, security,
  etc?

When I talked with the customers both mentioned they are worried about
the "performances differences between both schemes". I am not sure
this could be an issue however I need to know your comments in order
to prepare a powerful and winner proposal.

thanks in advance andf best regards

Julio Lerios
