1188.0. "DECbridge900 fails diags." by BIGUN::WULFF () Wed Jul 06 1994 09:05
Hi,
I have some weird problems that I cannot understand. Below is a error
log dump of the DECbridge900 that may explain these problems.
I updated a DECbridge900MX and the DEChub900 with the latest firmware
and updated Hubwatch to V3.
I then proceded to have fun by creating LANs (ethernet and fddi) and
switched the DECbridge900MX bridge ports including the FDDI (both port
A and B) to the backplane channels channels.
I don't remember removing the DECbridge900 from the backplane without
power but is possible.
What I discovered was that sometime later was that the DECbridge900
would fail its diagnostics whenever power was removed from the hub or
if the bridge was removed and reinserted immediately.
Diagnostic failure would be,
. Power light on.
. Fans flat out.
. No 1 left light flashing amber
. PHY port A and B flashing.
Hubwatch LAN interconnect displays unknown module with FDDI links.
Remove DECbridge900 and refresh Hubwatch and LAN interconnect then
displays empty slot with FDDI links.
If I don't put the module immediately back and leave it out for 10-15
minutes then insert it will pass self test the module is then known to
Hubwatch and the FDDI links will disappear.
I have included the console information on the DEChub and DECbridge900.
The error log on the DECbridge has errors and may explain these
problems.

1188.1 | Need more info..... | NACAD2::BATTERSBY | | Wed Jul 06 1994 11:09 | 7 |
| Hi Ole. We need some additional information.
1. When the failure occurs, what is the Module_OK LED doing?
2. When the failure occurs, what color are the flashing PHY Port LEDs?
3. Can the problem be re-created?

| Bob,
> 1. When the failure occurs, what is the Module_OK LED doing?
The OK light is not on.
> 2. When the failure occurs, what color are the flashing PHY Port LEDs?
Green.
> 3. Can the problem be re-created?
Yes, if the following is true.
It almost appears to be heat sensitive. All I need to do is run the
module (DECbridge900) for some time remove and immediately install it
back in the hub and it will fail. Leave it out of the hub for some time
and then install it back and it will pass diags. I have reset all
modules back to factory settings and reloaded the firmware.
When the module passses diags I have confirmed that all the front panel
ports work including the FDDI port. I can switch the ports between the
backplane and the front with hubwatch. I have not verified that the
FDDI works on the backplane but I have verified that port 2 works ok.
No, if the following is true.
I have not used another hub and another decbridge and followed the same
sequence. I am not game to as this a customer installation.
What does the error log show. Are the CRC errors some thing to be concerned
about?
Thanks,
|
1188.3 | Heat sensitive? | BIGUN::WULFF | | Wed Jul 06 1994 22:00 | 10 |
| I did some more testing which suggests that the module is heat sensitive.
I tried again this morning and this is what I found.
Remove power from the DECbridge900MX for a few seconds the bridge fails diags.
Remove the module from the hub for 20 minutes and reinstall module and it then
passes.
Regards Ole.

1188.4 | 9 Second Window | LEVERS::DRAGON | | Thu Jul 07 1994 09:06 | 10 |
|
Ole,
You might want to try removing power for less than 9 seconds and
then again for greater than 9 seconds. The MAM takes about 9
seconds to recalculate power. This may provide more clues as to
the problem.
Just a thought,
Bob

1188.5 | Bridge needs to be returned and analyzed.... | NACAD2::BATTERSBY | | Thu Jul 07 1994 14:22 | 4 |
| Ole, I'll be contacting you off line. I think we ought to get
that bridge back here for analysis.
