    I Have a site that is using both single mode and multimode fiber (mixed
    for redundancy/distance issues).  I know all the hub fiber modules
    (repeaters and bridges) support multimode fiber but what about single
    mode?  I can see that the DECconcentrator 900 supports both (depending
    on how it's configured), but can any of the repeaters or bridges be
    configured to support single mode fiber?  If so, what are the specific
    part numbers to do so?

    Fiber Ethernet repeaters do not support single mode fiber. The 10BaseFL
    standard, to which Digital's fiber repeaters comply, only specifies
    multi-mode fiber support.  There is no real benefit in using single
    mode fiber on Ethernet repeaters. The max network length would
    still be limited by the Ethernet timing budget (ie round trip
    propagation delay), regardless of how far the single mode fiber could
    reliably transmit data.

    I assume this is true for bridges also?  There may or may not be a
    benefit in using single mode fiber, but that is what is available for
    them to use.  Is there no way to use single mode fiber with our bridges
    (maybe utilizing a 3rd party single/multi converter - if there is such
    a thing?).
    
    I'd hate to have to tell them we can't use their expensive single mode
    fiber that already exists between locations...

    There are vendors out there who make optical converters.
    ODS (Optical Data Systems) is one that comes quickly to mind.
    They are based in Texas I think. I don't have any other information
    other than Digital has used ODS in the past as a third party vendor
    to help us in site solutions such as this.

    I just happen to have a 2 year old catalog of ODS at hand.
    
    They have 3 types of converters:
    
    ODS 377 	Token Ring, FOIRL Ethernet, RS232 Muxes, IBM 3270 Muxes
    	        (820 nm multimode)
    
    ODS 378	Ethernet  (820 nm Multimode)
    
    ODS 379	DEC Ethernet Bridges (1300 nm multimode)
    
    The 379 was (at that time) quoted at $ 5362.50 (DEC discount price)
