1164.0. "PROBEwatch and non-DEC RMON probes?" by ARRODS::NADER (Reorganising the reorganisation again?) Mon Jun 27 1994 14:19

I have a customer who has seen our PROBEwatch product and is currently
comparing this to Phoenix Datacom's Network Manager. The problem he has
with PROBEwatch and packetprobe is that this will only analyse at the
LAN level whereas the competition places its probes on the WAN and can
analyse at the WAN level (which is the customer's ultimate requirement)

As the competitive solution is three times our cost, he is looking to
    implement both solutions:

    1) For LAN analysis, place Packetprobe 90 RMON probes at all remote sites
and interrogate and analyse using PROBEwatch, and

    2) For WAN analysis, install Phoenix Datacom's RMON probes on the WAN
and have those also interrogated by PROBEwatch.

Is this (2) possible? If the WAN probe is RMON, will PROBEwatch be able to
    fetch and display the information?

If we can include these probes in the solution, we have bagged a rather
significant deal, and so any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Nader.

You are better off with netscout wan probe manager, because, we did
OEM decpacket probe from them. We didnot buy the wan piece. Since the
source code for probewatch will be same, buy lan probes from dec, and
    wan probes from netscout.

This sounds great! Where can I get details of functionality, prices and
supplier details from? Has anyone already implemented this coexistence?

You can buy NetScout WAN probes from Frontier Software Development
US Telephone 508-851-8872. They have some distributors in Europe.
Tell them that you are with DEC. Always sell our DECpacketprobes
first if they fit the application.

My understanding is that Digital Services will soon be able to
buy, sell, and service Frontier's products worldwide.

PROBEwatch for ULTRIX V1.1 (network kit) should work fine with
their WAN probe. The next release of PROBEwatch for Windows will
	also do the job.
