1144.0. "Packetprobe Upgrade problem" by DPDMAI::DAVIES (Mark, SCA Area Network Consultant) Wed Jun 22 1994 10:00

I just tried to down load new firmware into my DECpacketprobe 90 using
the "[10] Upgrade Software" option. It didn't work. This is the first
time I have ever tried to configure and use Bootp and TFTP with
    anything.

I have set the address of my Bootp server in the DECpacketprobe. the
responses I get from then selecting Option 10 are as follows:

Warning! this command will erase the FLASH
      Want to continue (y/n) : y

<16:06:53> TFTP error @ server : Access violation

      <16:06:54> tftpd: aborting transfer

The file /etc/bootptab on the server has the following following entry
    in it:

       # /etc/bootptab entries for DEC PacketProbe

            urc06:ht=1:ha=08002BA38902:ip=16.73.128.26:\
   	    :hd=/usr/local/bootp:bf=ns3210.s:\
            :sm=255.255.255.0:\
    	    :to=-18000:

The name, hardware and IP address correspond to my packetprobe.

The permissions on the file /usr/local/bootp are as follows:

      -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 601591 Jun 20 13:36 /usr/local/bootp/ns3210.s

Any help in why why I am getting an access violation is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark

1144.2Check directory access...NACAD::SLAWRENCEThu Jun 23 1994 09:167
Check the access on all directories leading to the file; the entire
hierarchy must be at least r-xr-xr-x or tftp won't load it.

Note that if any element of the path in your bootptab is a symbolic
link, then _both_ that path and the real directory must meet the above
    test.

1144.3Permissions are OK...DPDMAI::DAVIESMark, SCA Area Network ConsultantThu Jun 23 1994 10:1321
The directory which contains ns3201.s is /usr/local/bootp. These
    directories have permissions as follows:

      drwxr-xr-x 26 root system 8192 Jun 2 15:51 usr

      drwxr-xr-x 4 root system 8192 Jun 20 13:35 local

      drwxr-xr-x 2 root system 8192 Jun 20 13:36 bootp

The file has the following permissions:

      -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 601591 Jun 20 13:36 ns3210.s

    What next?

What else could be causing this kind of behavior?

    Thanks,

    Mark

Check your tftp server setup; it may require that that file be in
/tftpd. You may be able to make that a symbolic link to
/usr/local/bootp. The /tftpd directory should have a log file in it
named 'slog' that may have more information. Also check your system
setup for how tfptd is being invoked (it may have options that are
    causing problems).
1144.5TFTP working, erase flash isn'tDPDMAI::DAVIESMark, SCA Area Network ConsultantTue Jun 28 1994 15:3124
Ok we got TFTP working. But now we failing to load the software.

After we select #10 to upgrade, it finds the TFTP server and then
attempts to erase flash. We are now getting non-stop errors on the
    terminal as follows:

Error in flash erase write 3000000
Error in write verify to Flash address 0x3000000
       Expected data = 0x0, Read data = 0x3
Error in flash erase write 3000000
Error in write verify to Flash address 0x3000000
       Expected data = 0x0, Read data = 0x3

We have "reset" the unit and this didn't help. We have powered the
unit up/down and this didn't help. It just sits there a pounds out the
    above error message.

    What next?

    Thanks,

    Mark

Regarding .1

Look in LENAC_USER:[NETWORKS.MANAGE.RMON]PROBCODE.TXT

This is not the final code to be released, but it does include some
improvements.
