1110.0. "Resetting counters,status on 900 products?" by NPSS::WADE (Network Systems Support) Mon Jun 13 1994 11:34

    The requirement of rebooting to reset the box attributes on the
    DECbridge 5xx/6xx, DECconcentrator 500 and LANbridge xxx products
    has been a fairly common customer complaint.

    Is it possible to reset the attributes (counters, status, etc) of the
    DECbridgeMX 900 and DECconcentrator 900MX without rebooting the box?

We don't have that capability today, and there are no plans to add this
capability. (None of the 900 products have this capability.)

Could we do it? Sure, it's a simple matter of programming. ;-)
Unfortunately, it's *a lot* of programming.

Resetting counters is one of those religious issues. There are many good
arguments against it. Unfortunately, these arguments don't stand up to
well when our customers demand this feature.

One of the best solutions I've heard of is to have the Network Management
Station (NMS) artificially reset the counters. The NMS keeps a copy
of the counters value when reset and then subtracts this value before
presenting new values to the user. One of the many advantages of this
is that is works well with multiple NMSs.

Someone will have to access the "bang for the buck" in adding this feature.
Thanks for the input.
