1080.0. "dechub900 question with decagent90" by HITEKS::PEER () Tue Jun 07 1994 16:30

    I have sold the customer a DEChub900 solution. The configuration
    consists of DecBridge900, 2 900TM's, 1 90C and 1 90FS. The customer
    also has the OpenVMS V3.0 of Hubwatch. The question is do I need the
    DecAgent90 to manage the 90C and 90FS. The documentation is somewhat
    confusing and I would like to get a clear answer to the question. Also
    if anyone has a pointer to the Installation and Configuration manual
    for Hubwatch V3 for OpenVMS it would be greatly appreciated. The
    pointers to TNPUBS and NAC::MANAGEMENT do not seem to contain the
    information I'm seeking. (unless I just can't find it)

    You do not need a DECagent 90 to manage the DECrepeater 90C and 90FS
    in a DEChub 900.

1080.2Why the confusion???HITEKS::PEERTue Jun 07 1994 16:465
    Bob,

    	Can you tell me why I'm getting such conflicting information from
    Colorado. I was under the same impression, but everyone that I talk
    with tells me that I need the DecAgent90.

    No. Perhaps it's because with a DEChub 90 you need a DECagent 90
    to manage DECrepeater 90s. Can't really speculate beyond that. You
    might ask your Colorado contact for the source of this information.
    Perhaps there is some source which needs correction (ie doc., etc.).

    Bob
1080.4source of confusion?SLINK::HOODI'd rather be at the KennebecWed Jun 08 1994 10:5621
And just for the record, if you have any of the following devices in a
DEChub 900, you need to have a DECagent 90...
	DECbridge 90
	DECbridge 90FL
	DECserver 90L
	DECserver 90L+
Everything else is manageable withough a DECagent 90.

Now then, the confusion might be coming from the following (I'm quoting the
HUBwatch Installation manual, section 3.9)...
        "If you lack the necessary IP services module or SLIP support for
	 the Hub Manager[...], you can manage the following modules in a
	 DEChub 900MS through a DECagent 90 on the same LAN segment:
	 o DECbridges 90, 90FL
	 o DECrepeaters 90C, 90FA, 90FL, 90T, 90T+
	 o DECservers 90L, 90L+"
What this means (I think) is that if you don't have the DEChub 900 Hub
Manager configured, you use the DECagent 90 to manage the dumb repeaters.

Hello,

	I think I know where the confussion is. Reply 4 hit on it. We find in
the HUbwatch installation and configuration guide various tables indicating what
is required to manage a certain module when it is installed in a ceratin kind of
hub. We look up the DECbridge 90/90FL first and find that an agent is required
to manage it. We therefore make an assumption that because we need an agent for
the bridge we must therefore need an agent for the repeaters.
	In many calls we find both bridges and repeaters and therefore don't go
beyond the bridge part. A fault on our part. I will send mail to my team members
indicating the facts of the matter and hope that this solves the problem.
