997.0. "DECbridge 900MX Architecture" by NZOMIS::YOUNG () Wed May 18 1994 01:52

Does anybody know what type of processor the DECbridge 900MX uses e.g.
    CISC, RISC?
Are there any documents on the architectural design of this product. I
have a customer who would like this info, also it would be good for our
    own knowledge.

Also, how does this product compare in performance /price to the Cisco
    Workgroup switch (Catalyst)?

Allen,

The DECbridge900 uses a Motorola 68040. This is a CISC processor.
There is also a lot a hardware assist on the DECbridge900 which reduces
the burden on the processor.

The bridge folks are reluctant to answer questions about what processors
are used, how much memory is used, etc. because there's great potential
to misuse the information. Customers shouldn't be comparison shopping
based on processor type. The most important thing for a customer to
know about the DECbridge900 is that it screams (read: goes really,
really fast). It forwards at about 60,000 packets per second. If forwards
at wire-speed and filters at line-rates. (I wouldn't care if the bridge
ran on steam so long as it performed well. ;-)

Contact Shou Lee (delni::s_lee) or Anil Rijsinghani (levers::anil) for
hardware questions and/or performance numbers. They may be able to
help with your questions about the architectural design and competitive
information.
