| I get the "SNMP-TRAP port 162 is already in use" also and have no idea
what it means.
Concerning the "Unknown agent "RMON1", Check Host file!", I have found
via my testing that this occurs when PROBEwatch cannot find the
RMON1.AGE. When the memo said make a copy of PPROBE1.AGE, you also
have to change the name of the file to be the name of your probe. My
probe works fine in this respect.
I recreated this problem on my system by bringing up PROBEwatch,
clicking on Configure->Add Agent and then entering a random value for a
agent name. This is then added to the list of agents. Then, by
selecting the random agent name and then clicking on Domain View will
give the "Unkown agent" message.

Mark

979.2 | *.AGE correct | WARNUT::64021::Tim_Banks | Network Mercenary | Thu May 12 1994 13:48 | 17 |
| When you add a probe from the menu, it automatically creates a file probe.age
with the probe details in it. So my files rmon1.age and rmon6.age are in
C:\nsclients directory, as is the hosts file. It sounds to me that
probewatch doesn't even try to read the hosts file as there is no disk
activity at the point where you click domain view.
When launching the the probewatch application from windows, do you need a
path set to C:\NSCLIENTS, a working directory set to C:\nsclients, etc?
I checked that the .age and host files are correct as I said above but still
no go.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

what I am doing.
Thanks again

979.5 | DNS problem | WARNUT::64021::Tim_Banks | Network Mercenary | Fri May 13 1994 05:10 | 13 |
| Looking at a trace from IRIS, it looks to me like a DNS problem somewhere. I
see the DNS request go out and a reply come back, but PW doesn't appear to do
anything with it.
Can you set up a host file without providing a full name rmon1.lkg.dec.com?
What I see happening is that if I take the full name out and just use the
alias, it still tries to use DNS. DNS on the PC is working as I can ping
using a full name and that works fine.
Frustrated......I want to play with the new toy!!! :-)

| Hi,
I copied the hosts file to hubwatch\ipstack to solve this problem.

Yep, it works with the ipstack for Hubwatch. What do we need to
setup for use with Pathworks V5 stack?

Well PV5 doesn't work for me. I have an alternate startup for
Hubwatch and Probewatch will only work when the Hubwatch stack is used.
Why should we have to move the hosts file to the ipstack directory from
hubwatch for Probewatch to work?
Hmmmm....

| Has anyone else found that after running probewatch, and closing windows on
the PC instead of going directly to the DOS prompt, you get a message "ann
application was communicating with the network......", and when clearing that
message, you get a mosaic on the screen, and then the DOS prompt?

Hopefully, all of these are solved with the released kit, which
allows you to install PROBEwatch in any directory. It will put
the hosts file in the /ipstack subdirectory if you install the
network from the kit. Otherwise, it expect the hosts file to be
in the directory where your IP stack is located.
I've tried to explain the DNS vs hosts file operation in the
README.TXT. If this isn't sufficient, please let me know.
