954.0. "DB90 Problems with Novell" by BOHIO::WROSARIO () Tue May 03 1994 13:18

I have a customer that is having problems when connecting a Novell LAN
to his LAN. They are running their LAN with TCP/IP and when they
connect the new LAN the Novell Stations start hanging. If we removed
the Novell Lan and isolate him the Novell LAN runs perfect.

In this site we have some HUBS in the computer room and four remote
closets connected by fiber to the computer room. The fibers in the
computer room are connected to a fiber repeater and at the remote
    closets to a DECbridge.

I was lloking in the owners manual to verify how can I filter this on
the Bridges but it is not to friendly to use. I also saw in this
conference that there is not other manual for the bridge. The customer
    doesn't have Hubwatch.

does anyone knows something related to this?
Does anyone knows how to filter this?

William,

Check note 843.* in this conference and 281.* in UPSAR::Ethernet.
Both describe limitations of DB90s in Novell environments.

954.2Answer to Note 954.1BOHIO::WROSARIOTue May 03 1994 15:0912
Right now I'm trying to know if the problem mentioned in note 843.* in
this conference was solved because we had a problem like the one
mentioned, so that conference doesn't help me. I read already
conference 281.* in UPSAR::Ethernet and I'll verify the same with the
    SPS Group.

What are the difference, if any, in the version of the bridges, I was
looking in some notes in this conference that a lot of people is
recommending to have or upgrade to V3. This because have solutions to
previous problems? Or just to have the Bridges in the last version?

William,

Please read 843.* again. This problem has NOT been fixed because there is
no single fix for it. The DB90 sends a perfectly valid message that some
(or possibly MANY) TCP/IP implementations can't handle. As suggested in 843.4,
you can disable management and see what happens.

With regard to UPSAR::ETHERNET # 281.*, the DB90 cannot filter anything it
can't decipher. Since the Novell 802.3 format really isn't 802.3, the DB90
can't figure out waht it is and just passes it through. Novell also supports
Ethernet V2 format which ***SHOULD*** work.

The suggestion to upgrade to V3.1 is probably based on the "newer is better"
theory. Very little of the DB90's bridge functionality is implemented in the
firmware. If you are using something less than 3.1, the upgrade certainly won't
hurt but I doubt that it will gain you much. Conversely, there are also two
different hardware revisions of the DB90 (only one for the 90FL). These can most
easily be identified by the ROM revision, either 1.14 or 2.1. If you have an
older unit with 1.14 you might experiment with a 2.1 unit. Please note that the
entire unit must be exchanged. The ROMs cannot be interchanged between hardware
revisions.

    JOHNSON:

Thanks for your inputs, I talked with the SPS guy in order to him to
include what we did when we had the problem mentioned in 843.*. This
could probably help everyone if they did something different or
    probably the same.

In reference to the original problem we'll be creating a team to attack
this problem, as soon as I get more info, bad or good news, I'll be
    posting the results.

    tks,
