935.0. "DH900 + HUBWATCH QUESTIONS" by BBOV01::MACKENZIE () Tue Apr 26 1994 02:12

(Apologies for the mix of product and HUBwatch questions in
one splat but the answers are all related to one piece of
            business)

I am replying to a government tender, I seek assistance with
            the following points:

            1. When should routing software be available for the
            DECbridge900 ?

            2. Re: the above, what router software functionality planned
in the initial release, e.g.. TCP/IP, IPX etc ?

            3. Will the routing software be provided at no cost to any
existing DEcbridge maintenance/warranty customers, or will a
separate routing upgrade license have to be purchased ?

            4. If a routing license must be purchased what is the current
            estimate of the cost ?

            5. Do you know of any plans to port HUBWATCH to SUNet manager
            ?

            6. What scope and functionality is there to use GUI based
SNMP management of DEChub products from a third part NMS
            (SUNet manager) ?

            7. Can the following be clarified. In a DH900 configuration
for example, where the six internal flex busses are assigned
to Ethernet use, do FDDI modules use other backplane busses
(6+2) in addition to the 6 already in use, or would the FDDI
require the use of two of the flex channels ?

            Regards,

            Tony

The FDDI modules use other backplane channels. There are 18 backplane
channels (with caveats), so there's plenty of room for FDDI and Ethernet
modules.

There are no definite plans. People are thinking about it,
but it is not scheduled work. How important is this?

Absolutely everything HUBwatch does, it does through SNMP using
published MIBs. If there is a general-purpose SNMP tool on *any*
platform, it should work with any of the DEChub components.
[However, keep in mind that although the MIBs are published, they
are not necessarily easy to use. For example, backplane
interconnect is complicated. It can be done perfectly well with a
generic SNMP tool, but that would require an intimate familiarity
	 with the MIBs.]
