909.0. "DECpacketprobe90 and HUb900" by PADNOM::PEYRACHE (Jean-Yves Peyrache Country Support Group France) Tue Apr 19 1994 13:13

 hi,

seems to be impossible to hooked the Decpacketprobe90 on flexible channel other
than the thinwire channel on DECHUB900-MS ??

 any clue,hints,??

my customer have already 5 ethernet in Dechub900, and want to monitor all with
the probe.

workaround is to put a external power on the probe and a TP cable between
front panel of probe and repeater900TM.

 thanks for any comments

    Jean-Yves,
Other than physically cabling the DECpacketprobe up in
standalone fashion with its 10baset connector to the repeater modules
on the different LAN's the only alternative is to use one of the
repeater modules to connect the hub900 thinwire channel to the flexible
    channel needing to be monitored.
i.e. The DECrepeater 900 allows it to connect the internal thinwire
channel to any of the other 6 flexible channels. By mounting the probe
into the hub it will connect onto the thinwire. Then by using the dual
connection facility of the DECrepeater 900's any can have their
flexible channel connected to the thinwire for monitoring. A bit long
winded I know but I'm sure we can sell it as an advantage, keeps cost
    lower ? etc.

  Ross,

 thanks for your reply,

but in this case (move repeater900) you brake the isolating picture
make in my customer site (aka 5 repeater900 on 5 differents lan with no
connexion between us)

this configuration is requested for security and for creating a seperate lan
in a same hub900.

any other ideas /new product will be welcomed

The DECpacketprobe90 only connects to the ThinWire. You can succesfully
use the technique described in the prior reply if the probe is the only
device on the ThinWire. Connect the repeater on one of the channels to
the ThinWire. You are now monitoring the traffic on that channel. When
you want to monitor another channel disconnect the current one from
ThinWire and connect the other channel to ThinWire. If you need to
monitor all 5 channels simultaneously then you must use the external
connection technique. A future module will allow simultaneous
monitoring but its a ways off.
