808.0. "Performance gauges for Backplane....a.k.a. the "over all picture"?" by LICAUS::LICAUSE (Al Licause (264-4780)) Wed Mar 09 1994 16:13
Is it possible to either setup the existing HUBwatch product or at some later
date add the capability to monitor the overall performance of an individual
channel?
What I'm really looking for is that which would be appropriate for a large site.
Today, it is possible to have continuous monitoring through LTM using a bar
graph to show the overall performance of an individual LAN, then monitor several
LANS at once on a single screen.
The gauges that are displayed today appear to allow monitoring of individual
ports. This is great once a portion of the LAN is isolated with a possible
problem. But I would think that most large sites would want to be able to
monitor each channel or if setup as a single channel, the whole hub for over
all performance.
For most of the time, the management center would probably want to view the over
all performance, then zero in if a particular segment or LAN channel is showing
excessive utilization.
I would also envision a smaller window containing perhaps the three gauges as
seen today for a larger segment, or a small window showing a selectable peice of
the "performance picture" such that several such windows could be displayed on a
single screen for many hubs. Today, the window is large enough that a continous
display of multiple hubs would be probitive w/o overlaying several displays or
having many of them iconified.
.....or is a LANprobe really what is required to do this?
If so, then the only problem would be the number of LANprobes required for a
large site. Easy enough to place a single probe in a hub and move it from
channel to channel, but then one for each hub could make this solution cost
prohibitive.
Comments please!

| Well this is interesting. If this is a single hub and you want to do
this, I would wait for the per port switchable DECrepeater 900. Since
we support 7 Ethernets (DEChub 90 + 6 flexible), you could plug 7
DECpacketprobe 90s into a 10BaseT port. Then using Hubwatch, drag each
of the ports to each of the 7 LANs on the backplane.
Can Probewatch talk to more than 1 DPP90 at the same time?

Sure, you can open a small graph window for each probe until you
run out of resources on the PC or Workstation.
