781.0. "Notes from testing T2.8" by OSL09::OYVINDC (yvind Christoffersen) Tue Mar 01 1994 15:13
Hi,
I have been testing T2.8 for a couple of days
and here are my findings. Overall, I think
HUBwatch has a very good look and feel and
please excuse me if I have misunderstood some
function.
(1)Moving the thresholds on the dials can
cause hw to crash. When I move the "yellow
threshold" on the frames/s dial to the point
that it goes yellow and then move the pointer
towards the center of the dial without
releasing the mouse button, hw crashes with
an Application Error window coming up reading
"Floating point error :invalid".
After restarting hw I immediately get a
window labeled "HUBwatch: Error" displaying
"No buffer space is available. The socket
cannot be created. Please restart IP network
service."
(2)Also, after setting a threshold, it leaves
a line at the bottom of where the
alphanumeric box appeared.
(3)I did not find any help on how the
thresholds on the dials could or should be
used. Can they be saved and also are they
functional when viewing the "Repeater
Summary" window?
(4)Clicking Help in the menu Adding and
deleting communities: The help text uses the
term Agent box and this is not entirely
precise. Is it the "Agent File" field?
(5)In the help menu, the reset button in the
Performance field is called "Reset" only and
not "Reset Peak" as is displayed.
(6)After enabling security on a port and
exciting back to the "Repeater Port Summary"
window, you must make a refresh to see the
effect in the Security field, not very
logical.
"Wish list"
After starting HUBwatch, you should be able
to select amongst those agents stored in the
hw_agent.dat or enter a new one. In T2.8 the
latter is default.
When enabling port security, I find it
practical to go from the "Repeater Summary"
window to the "Repeater Summary: port 'n'"
window and there read the MAC address from
the field "Last source address seen". Then I
open the security window and enter the MAC
address. This is tedious because you cannot
cut and paste between those fields. I think a
defaulting of the MAC address or a
cut-and-paste is needed until we have
autosecurity (in the summer?).
Regards,
Oyvind.
