716.0. "DECbridge 900MX features" by LEVERS::ANIL () Wed Feb 09 1994 21:12

With the DECbridge 900MX formally announced, here is a feature list
which should help answer questions that folks have been coming
up with. Product management is also in the process of preparing Info
sheets as well as Network Buyer Guide updates for this product.

* 1 FDDI port (DAS MIC), 6 Ethernet ports (2 AUI, 4 10BaseT)
  (other options with D/S)
* Forwarding performance - 60,000 pps (packets per second)
* Filtering performance - Line rate (~500,000 pps FDDI + ~15,000 per Ethernet)
* Address database capacity - 8,000 stations
* SNMP MIBs supported:
  - MIB-II (RFC-1213)
  - Bridge MIB (RFC-1493)
  - FDDI MIB (RFC-1512)
  - Ethernet MIB (RFC-1398)
  - Digital ELAN Vendor MIB (enterprise MIB)
  - Digital PCOM MIB (enterprise MIB)
* User-friendly GUI management via HUBwatch
* Spanning Tree loop detection
  - IEEE 802.1d standard
  - Digital LB100 protocol
* Management Address filtering
  - SA and DA filtering
  - restriction of specified addresses to specified set of ports
* Manual mode to disable learning and manually configure addresses
* Management Protocol filtering (Ethernet PT/802 SAP/802 PID)
  - restriction of specified protocols to specified set of ports
* User-settable Rate limit for broadcast and multicast storms
* Transparent translation between FDDI and 802.3/Ethernet formats
* AppleTalk 1 and 2 AARP translation across FDDI; IPX "raw 802.3"
  translation to FDDI
* IP Fragmentation as per RFC-791 (Internet Protocol) and
  RFC-1191 (Path MTU Discovery)
* Flash memory upgrade via setup port (console) menu/NDU/any TFTP server
* Router-ready (via Flash upgrade)
* Out of band management with SNMP over SLIP
* Each Bridge LAN connection switchable in the DEChub 900 to a separate
  backplane LAN (used to fan out to repeaters and concentators)
* Single-slot option for hub; slim and lightweight standalone form factor
  with D/S

716.1WHEN routing? WHICH routing?ALFETA::MAURICIOFertile PectusFri May 06 1994 16:015
    Can anybody please give us an expected availability date for the
    routing functionality? And which protocols this router will be able to
    route?

    The first routing upgrade will support IP. See 933 for a contact
    to get further info.

    By the way, the info glossy I mentioned in the preceding note is now
    available for the DECbridge 900MX.

716.3Bradner's Harvard lab test resultsLEVERS::ANILWed May 18 1994 21:1815
    Scott Bradner tested the DECbridge 900MX and published the results at
    Interop+Networld a couple weeks back. I have extracted the more
    important figures below from a detailed report. Note that the "0"
    latency is Scott's observed results on his test setup; there is of course
    a very small finite latency.

    Maximum lossless throughput - 62,488 pps
    Ethernet to Ethernet latency - 0
    Ethernet to FDDI latency - 70 microseconds
    IP Fragmentation - Max rate (ie, the Ethernet is saturated)

    Also, it forwards at wire-speed - 60 Mbps which is theoretical max for
    a 6-Enet to FDDI bridge.

716.4Online copy of Scott Bradner report?SEDPCW::ESPH01::evans_maKeep on smilin'Wed Sep 28 1994 08:588
Anil,

At Network Academy last week, reference was made to Scott Bradner's report.
Is this on the Easynet somewhere that I can copy. Indeed, is there an update
available from the May '94 testing. Specifically I'm interested in
positioning against Cabletron,

Regards, Martin

    Scott Bradner's report on the DB900MX is on:

    machine: hsdndev.harvard.edu
    directory: /pub/ndtl/results/vendors/Digital/DECbridge_900MX

    You could access it from the Web with the URL
    ftp://hsdndev.harvard.edu/pub/ndtl/results/vendors/Digital/DECbridge_900MX/

    Since the name has changed we may have to go back to him, however
    the performance will be the same. We will probably take all 3 switch
    products to his lab at some point.

The path is no longer valid. I FTP'd to the machine two days ago,
and vendors is no longer a directory, but a text file.

    Everything you always wanted to know about the switches is
    now on the Web (more in 1512.0):

716.9vms pointerKAOFS::R_YURKIWreward those who bring bad news!!Mon Oct 03 1994 11:208
    Can someone give me a pointer to a VMS directory that I can access.
    Unfortunately we aren't allowed to play on the internet here in Canada
    yet so I need a valid VMS pointer for these docs....

    much appreciated.
