707.0. "XXXwatch vs Histrical Recording" by TKTVFS::NEMOTO (no facts, only interpretations) Tue Feb 08 1994 10:34

What does XXXwatch see in general about the historical recording
capability?

Realtime monitor feature is nice, but it's only a partial solution when it
comes to the network performance management. When you gather a network
traffic data for a period of at least one week on, say, an ethernet
segment for example, you could see a typical traffic pattern on that segment.

If you haven't understood the patten on a segment, how do you judge
whether or not a current traffic value captured with the realtime monitor
is within a nominal range?

If you expand the data gathering from a week to months or to a year,
it will then help in understanding changes of traffic patterns and hence in
a trend analysis.

A traffic pattern will also be an important facter in determining
the threshould value properly.

Thank you,
_Tak

Well.. I wonder if my question was somewhat vague..

Any comments from the xxxwatch world on having the historical traffic
recording capability?

Thanks

    I may be wrong, because I haven't played with it yet, but doesn't
    ProbeWatch have historical recording facilities?

    If not then I as a Network Manager would like it to have, with export
    in comma or tab delimited format...for Excel ;*)

707.3xxxwatch strategy is different for HUBwatch and PROBEwatchNAC::FORRESTMon Mar 07 1994 15:278
	PROBEwatch will have historical reporting with an export in
	delimited ascii. Look at the current ULTRIX 1.1 kit for a preview.
	NAC::MANAGEMENT:RMON*

	For now HUBwatch assumes that you will do historical reporting
	with an umbrella NMS such as Polycenter NetView.
