701.1 | Use the correct version for correct results | KALI::BURNETT | | Mon Feb 07 1994 14:19 | 39 |
|
My name is Joe Burnett (KALI::BURNETT, DTN 226-6908). I am
the developer of the piece of .....censored that you are
referring to.
The problem is that you are running a field test version of the
software. Since you were not authorized to receive it, you didn't
receive the announcement that the V1.0 version is available as of
December 27, 1993.
Anyway, the answers you want are as follows:
The first system (10Base2) that you described yields the following
numbers, assuming one defmr in the middle hub:
% MAX BIT TIME
Max Round Trip Delay (RTD): 102.5% 589.314
Max IPG Shrinkage 110.2% 54.000
The second system (10BaseT) yields the following numbers:
% MAX BIT TIME
Max Round Trip Delay (RTD): 99.7% 573.055
Max IPG Shrinkage 99.0% 48.500
Now, if you would like to receive our V1.0 (which, by the way,
had no problem modeling your configurations), send me mail at
KALI::BURNETT, and I will send you our qualifying questionnaire
to fill out. Once I receive this, I will send you a pointer
to the released version. Of course, you could simply use
you midnight hacks for which you have expressed a preference ;-).

701.2 | Secret tools lack public acceptance | BIKINI::KRAUSE | European NewProductEngineer for MCC | Tue Feb 08 1994 08:13 | 11 |
| The pointer to the field test version was given during a DEChub 900
training. I tried it too, and it was not even worth the disk space it
used. Sorry Joe, but even a field test should be more stable.
I got the questionaire, but I'm not going to fill it in. One reason is:
I hate questionaires. Do you really expect people to formally apply for
internal tools? I sure would like to have a look at the final version to
see if it works and what I could probably use it for (I'm working in a
CSC in Network support). But if you keep it like a secret - keep it.

701.3 | Questionnaires allow continued development | KALI::BURNETT | | Tue Feb 08 1994 08:31 | 19 |
|
The field test was more public than I would have liked, but we
had no choice. If there were problems, why weren't they reported?
That is what field tests are for.
As far as the questionnaire is concerned, the tool is distributed
free of charge. The only way we have to justify continued development
and support is to know how many people are using it, and for what
purpose. Over 200 people have taken the time (2 minutes?) to fill
it out.
Anyway, if you don't want to complete the questionnaire, that's up
to you. You can always do these calculations by hand. I'm sure in
less time than it takes to fill out the questionnaire ;-).

I used the tool at his machine...
He told me that's the newest version he knows of
I am not in the office, and on vacation the next 4wks
so I can't respond anymore before mid march
About Quality:
I am 17 yrs with DEC now, normally I expect a FT to work at least a
little bit, but this Version is just something much less than FT
Quality...
I am going to try the next Version and will send You my Opinion !
